Show Escalante Coal Lease Study Issued by BLM ESCALANTE The Bureau of Land Management, Escalante Resource Area, has released a draft environmental en-vironmental assessment (EA) on Sun Oil Company's preference right coal lease appclication. The application area is located some 15 miles southwest of Escalante on the Kane and Garfield county line. A total of 18,374 acres and an estimated 844 million tons of coal are involved. Approximately 337 million tons of the coal is recoverable through underground mining methods. Under regulations in effect at the time Sun Oil discovered this coal an applicant is entitled to a noncompetitive non-competitive lease if, after obtaining the proper permits, he demonstrates he has discovered commercial quantities of coal. The Mineral Management Service has notified the BLM that Sun Oil has met the initial requirement to be eligible for a non-competitive lease. The draft EA analyzes environmental en-vironmental impacts based on the company's conceptual plan of operations. After the EA is finalized, the company must make a final showing indicating estimated reveneus and costs based on environmental protection measure identified in the EA. Those wishing to reivew the EA may do so at the Escalante Resource Area, the Kanab Resource Area, the Cedar City District or the Utah State Office. Comments on the adequacy of the draft EA should be submitted to the Escalante Resource Area Manager, Bureau of Land Management, Escalante, Utah 84726.
