Show I Bryce Valley Wing Pair handler usually content to pass off, scored a season high 17 points to really give the Mustangs a shot in the arm against an alyays tough Gunnison team. In Saturday's run away with North Sevier, Clare Ramsays team built up a 53-31 half time lead before coasting on in with the 96-83 victory. George Thompson ripped in 28 big ones, while the ever improving Wade Ramsay scored In the 20's for the second night in a row with 24. Richard Ott, of course, got his share too as he piled up 21 points on the night. The Mustangs head to Wayne County this weekend, playing about as good a game of basketball as they can for this point in the season. A big game looms in one week as the BV boys head for Piute on the 21st for what should be sole ownership of the division and an inside track on the title. WRESTLERS CONTINUE . TOUGH Panguitch High School wrestlers rolled past the Parowan Rams 54-12 last week as they won all but two matches in the dual meet. Winners were as follows: Tim Tebbs, Ray Roundy, Troy Josie, Kerry LeFevre, Danny Frandsen, Dave Schow, Stewart Reynolds and Troy Leach. A couple of weights were won by forfeit for Panguitch. In the weekend 16-team tournament tour-nament held in North Sevier, ace grappler Troy Josie was a first place winner. The tourney featured five, 2A schools and nine 1A teams. It was a tribute to Josie to win in such a large gathering. By John Yardley The Bryce Valley Mustangs continued their winning ways last weekend as they rolled over Gunnison Gun-nison 76-61 and North Sevier 96-83 and kept Intact their perfect league record. Panguitch came up with a split, losing to Piute 82-62 and coming from behind to defeat Wayne at Bicknell 66-63. Escalante was not quite so fortunate as they fell narrowly 80-74 to North Sevier and then to Gunnison 68-47. For the Moquis, it was another case of a very fine effort that just fell short on Friday as they had to fight from behind. The Wolves from North Sevier led 42-26 at half time before the Moquis fought valianUy back to within three points before finally bowing 80-74. In fact, at one point North Sevier led by nearly 30 points, only to see the spunky Escalante team make a run. Four Moqui players scored in double figures for Coach Jim Smith including Dirk Durfey with 21, Clint Porter with 20, Jerry Hawks with 13 and George Galae'i with 10. Saturday, however, the Bulldogs from Gunnison were just to much as they rolled to an easy victory over the worn-down Moquis. Clint Porter scored 19 to lead the team. This week Escalante travels to Panguitch. For Panguitch, it was a brilliant first quarter as Piute which saw them lead by as many as eight points and a first period ending lead of 22-17. However, Piute battled back in the second period to lead 38-32 38-32 at half. In the second half, Piute's combination com-bination inside-outside game put the Bobcats away for good. Lawrence Orton and Jody Davis hit for 13 each and Heath Sartini 12 to lead Panguitch scoring in the 82-62 loss. On Saturday, Panguitch overcame over-came a 10 point Wayne County lead as they battled back for the close 66-63 66-63 win. The game was tied 40-40 at half time before the Badgers opened the lead to 10 in the third period. In the fourth quarter, Panguitch rallied back and when Wayne tried to go into a soft freeze, the Bobcats stole the ball about four straight times to go ahead. In the end, it was a terrific defense and critical free throw shooting that won by Coach Brian McAllister's squad. Heath Sartini had a tremendous first half, scoring 16 points, and finished the game with 17 points and 17 rebounds. Jody Davis scored 17 with a fine second half effort and also pulled down 12 boards; Nate Brinkerhoff hit for 12 and consistent Kris Barney had 10. Barney, a bit weary from laying the back baseline on the zone defense two nights in a row, was a key contributor. In the final defense stand for Panguitch. Brinkerhoff and Lawrence Orton were impressvie on defense and on the boards as the two guards combined for 12 rebounds. In Bryce Valley's weekend homestand, the talent-laden Mustangs scored a whopping 172 points. Neither game was too difficult dif-ficult for the BV team as they got superb all around scoring. On Friday, Wade Ramsay dropped in 22, George Thompson 16 and Richard Ott 14 in their usual scoring parade. However, Dallin Baugh, a very fine leaper and ball |
