Show BOULDER DAM BILL IS DEAD IMPROMPTU ADDRESS TAKES PLACE WITH LEADING SPEAKERS OF NATION Remarkable Comeback May Mean Presidential Nomination by Party Washington Senator Heed of Missouri Mis-souri had a remarkable two days last week, tin Tuesday he made one of the best speeches ever made, and one of the best' speeches made in the senate sen-ate during recent years. It was the more remarkable in that it was nec- : essanly impromptu there could have been no preparation of it, no anticipation antici-pation of the occasion. Hofiin of Alabama Ala-bama had isaid some quite violent things about Mexico, Mr. Coolidge's policy toward Mexico, and the Catholic Cath-olic church. Reed was not called on to reply; ho has no party responsibility responsibil-ity for Mr. Coolidge, no official responsibility re-sponsibility fur our policy toward Mexico, and no personal responsibility for the Catholic church. His reply was utterly disinterested and utterly spontaneous. spon-taneous. Considering that, the euphony and form of Reed's speech, the eloquent periods into which it fell were really remarkable. Even in cold print they compare with ninny a prepared speech upon which men deliberately intent on fame have spent laborious care. If any overcritical reader, seeing the periods per-iods til the detachment of print, thinks they are a little emotional according to modern standards, the snflicient answer an-swer is that there was some emotion in the occasion. Actually, as Reed delivered his rounded sentences, one of the obvious aspects of them was a restraint that made the impression of a strong man in a gentle mood. - |
