Show Evans, Yeates Athletes of Week By TOM HARALDSEN Woods Cross basketball star Lance Evans, who tallied 21 points as the Wildcats dropped East in Region Four opening action Friday night, has been named Davis County Clipper-Little Clipper-Little Caesar's Pizza Male Athlete of the Week. Evans, a junior, sank three three-point shots, made four of four from the line, and hustled on defense as the Wildcats beat the Leopards 73-65. Other nominated included Evans' teammate Bret Rogers, who scored 20 points and also had three three-point baskets; Woods Cross' Mike Vanderlinden, scoring 17 points and grabbing grab-bing 10 rebounds; Bountiful basketballers Tony Smith, Jeff Reynolds, and Troy Fuller; and Davis High basketballers Brian Olson, Bryan Emery and Mike Welling (a previous winner). Our Female Athlete of the Week is Viewmont' s Becky Yeates. Ye-ates. The talented senior scored 18 points in a region-opening win over Highland, then came back with 19 in a non-league win over Skyline last Friday. Yeates, a senior, has started for three years for the Lady Vikes. Other nominees included teammate Tiffany Twitchell (previous (pre-vious winner), Woods Cross' Amy Mason, Marci Heaps (previous (pre-vious winner), Carolyn Knight and Jodie Warhurst; Bountiful's Julia "Judd' Thornley and Mona Hibbert; and Davis High's outstanding guard, Jaylynn Jorgensen. Each week, we will name an athlete of the week and present them with a certificate, plus pizzas from Little Caesar's Pizza in Bountiful. Athletes from Bountiful, Davis, Viewmont and Woods Cross are eligible for the award, and an athlete can win just once per each sports season.
