Show Nordic Skiing: Lakeside Ieiew, December 22, 1980, Iage lip By Royals ITS Ordeal ,"B Keaton 1 Mot Corafesi1 Allow if to Be By BOB BULLOCK ; Review Correspondent Just as with every other endurance related sport, nordic skiing can be as exciting or as dull as you choose to make it. By just strapping on the boards, and skiing the same trails, what started out as a new and exciting winter time pursuit might begin to seem fairly routine. With a little investigation however, the nordic enthusiast will soon begin to discover the myriad of opportunities that exist. For the adventurous, cross country may serve as an opportunity to get off the beaten path and do some winter camping in style, Many cross country lodges provide an interesting twist to this idea by organizing tours from one lodge to another, giving the skier an opportunity for a change of scenery as well as the sense of accomplishment that comes with traveling under your own power. Winter is also an excellent time to view nature as it tries to cope with its mantle of new fallen snow. This gives . . By BLISS FULLMER way to pursuits such as birdwatching and nature photography. But perhaps you are more competitive and are looking for a way to compete during the winter. Ski racing, cross country style, may be just such a means and it can be approached from many levels. For the casual competitor, citizen racing is a good way to test your abilities at shorter distances against other intermediate skiers who desire to see how their more competitive counterparts approach the sport. But for the highly trained athlete, competition continues on up through the Olympic level and can range in distance from a 10k sprint through the ski marathon distances. This is only the beginning. But it should be apparent that nordic skiing offers something for everyone. But dont get discouraged if you simply wish to use it as a way to enjoy the solitude of a frosty winter afternoon. The key is to enjoy the sport. Happy skiing. ' Staff Writer The Royals and Lancers fought on even terms to open the Region.
