Show Flower That Loved a Fish Once upon' a time a flower fell in love with a fish. But the fish said, "I canuot come out on land and be near you." So the flower said, "I will wade out Into the stream and. be near 1 you." Ever'- since then the pickerel weed is found wading In the shallow water of ponds and streams. Its bright purplish flowers crowded in a dense spike at the end of a fleshy stem one to four feet high attract many insects, and as these insects hover near the witter they are frequently fre-quently gulped down by an agile Hsh. In this way does the pickerel weed show its love for Its fish friend. Amid Its partly submerged dark . leaves the fish often lay their eggs. Some backwoodsmen years ago no ticed that the pickerel favored this weed and so they gave it the name It now bears. Kansas ''ity. Star. |
