The Kama area woman was shot and killed by her estranged husband hi February of this year in front of Albertsons market. He had been served with divorce papers and a restraining order Just one hour before. Nadalee was returning to the area to move into in-to a place of her own after a brief stay in the Salt Lake City Women's Shelter. The Journals were given to me by Nadalee's mother four weeks ago In hopes of having her daughter's story told. A few weeks ago a friend of mine talked to me about the unnatural order of a child dying before a parent. She recounted what someone had told her after her son's death "If God came to you and said I will by TERI ORR Record editor Nadalee's mother takes off her glasses and wipes her eyes as she points to the big institional building a mile or so down the road from her farmhouse in Riverton. "I just had to sell the house and move," says Darleen Puzey. "Donald is down there, at the prison, and every night when the lights go on, I just see him looking down here at me. I feel sorry for the bugger, in his own way, but I just can't stay here." Darleen had kept Nadalee's jour DEER VALLEY The Prudential Coleman Real Estate 614 Main Street P.O. Every mother I know anwers the same way. They would endure the pain of the loss because of the great Joy of the life they shared. Darleen Puzey is no different, her daughter died out of order, and she will not be there to comfort Darleen as she grows old. Aug. 21 would have been Nadalee's 44th birthday. It has been a painful process to touch and turn the pages that Nadalee wrote on and to hear, so clearly, her voice from her very private world. It would have been easier to have decided Nadalee's story didn't need to be told. It would have been easier, but it would have been wrong... nals for her for years. She never questioned why her daughter didn't want to keep them at home. Darleen knew why. And Darleen tried repeatedly to get her firstborn child out of her abusive marriage and on her own. She lent her money. She helped her find a house to rent, she helped outfit Nadalee's five children through the years. But try as she did, she could not save her life. "I was so sure about what was going to happen I could have taken out an insurance policy and gotten rich. I have never so felt so helpless in my whole life." "We had blankets and pots and pans and a bed for her. Oh, she was so excited. She went in that place and kept turning on all the facuets and squeeled with joy at the running runn-ing water. But somehow, even then we knew we was dreamin'. We knew Don would wreck it somehow he always did." Darleen takes an oil painting off the wall of a mother hen and her chickens. It is a work done by Nadalee. She is proud of all her daughter's handiwork. Punkie--Darleen's nickname for her daughter sewed and made ceramics and did tatting work. "I found this at Nadalee's house," says Darleen and she produces pro-duces a brightly colored ceramic fruit cookie jar. Inside are hundreds hun-dreds of foreign stamps. Nadalee had penpals from Burma to New Zealand and she kept some of their letters as well, but she loved the stamps. "That Punkie, I never knew she had all these," Darleen says with a laugh, "she was some kid." "At the women's shelter everybody had a code name, and hers was Liz Taylor. We got the biggest kick out of that, calling up and asking for Liz Taylor." Darleen sits back and looks through another stack of papers. She works hard to send cuppings to Nadalee's other seven siblings and keep them informed. But there are eight manila envelopes on the dining din-ing room table and the eighth one is simply addressed "Dolly." Darleen thinks maybe Nadalee's life and death is something singersongwriter Dolly Parton might be interested in and she intends in-tends to send her a packet of clippings clipp-ings too. "You know that song Dolly does, A Coat of Many Colors well, I heard that and thought maybe ol' Dolly could croon something about Nadalee. In fact, I wrote down some words one day when I drove up to Park City..." Darleen reaches into another pile and finds the back of an old checkbook where she had written some fragments.. "Forty-four an age she'll never see... he won't be needing his saddle and chaps anymore..." She reads a few paragraphs and she cries a little. "Sometimes Nadalee would try and tell me things was gonna be alright. She is quiet a minute, looking at the blue velvet scrapbook filled with newspaper clippings and photographs that cover her daughter's death in more detail than her life. "She had a hard life, " Darleen says quietly. "That dirt was so black up there it just never seemed to come off... had traces of her life up there..." February 22, 1983 ..."It is so nice to have a book to write in when I'm hurt, like today, or mad at Don or the kids, it is so nice to be able to write it all down, rather than saying it out loud, there needs to be some place to let it all out, and then I feel better, less hurt and less mad. I never feel as much need to write when everything is going well. April 5, 1983 ..."One of the sheep had a baby lamb this afternoon. It is so cute. Jason and Monaca were so delighted, the log cabin makes a wonderful sheep house, it is so cold, I hope the little thing dose good. It was only 10 F again this morning, but at lest we had sunshine half the day, and it did look and feel realy nice. We also had a bunch of baby bun-nys, bun-nys, about a week old now and doing do-ing good even throw all this cold, they are so cute, all black and white spotted. Mother is selling her pair of swans. I would love to have them. She is asking $150... Don could make me a wonderful pond, we have such a good place for one, with that stream running throw all the time. But I don't think Don will ever make a pond and I don't think I'll ever have swans. But still, this is a wonderful place and so good for the kids. It will be nice to plant the garden again and I am hopeful we can take the kids up the canyon and camp out. Monaca and Jason would love it so much. Don got an old truck trailer and he thinks he can put the camper on it and we may realy make it this year. Amy and Monaca are such good company to me. it's good to have someone to talk to. I finished reading the book "Wildering" to Monaca and Jason last nightTitonight I went to my , high school class, J am just doing my tests, but they are fun and I am doing pretty good...
