Raw water is treated for city Continued from A1 system, Archie MacDonald, vice president of sales for Filtronics, demonstrated how a miniature treatment system would turn rust-colored rust-colored water to crystal clear. The Filtronics treatment system, which is set up near the golf course maintenance building on Three Kings Drive, has been operating at 20 gallons per minute for the last month. A full-sized treatment system could handle 2,000 gallons per minute. "This piece of equipment has demonstrated that it can work here," said MacDonald. "Now we can develop the information that will allow engineers to design a piece of equipment that will work." The city invested $8,000 to contract with Filtronics for the pilot study, after touring the system at Snowbird last winter. No determination has been made regarding whether the city will purchase pur-chase such a system. MacDonald estimated that it could cost up to $2 million to install treatment equipment, equip-ment, a building to house it in, and all accessory equipment such as pipes. If the city decides to purchase the system, Lind said it would try to obtain ob-tain a low-interest loan from the state Safe Drinking Water Committee, Commit-tee, or a loan from the state Community Com-munity Impact Board. Finances could be supplemented by connection connec-tion and development fees. The impurity of the raw water coming from the Spiro Tunnel has ranged from 25 to 70 parts per billion of arsenic; the state health department depart-ment allows no more than 50 parts per billion for culinary use. Mac-. Mac-. Donald has been able to bring the arsenic level down to 20 parts per billion with the test equipment. The treatment process uses chlorine and sulfur that is placed in the water before it is filtered, unlike many water companies which add those chemicals after the water is filtered. MacDonald said the chemicals make the arsenic, iron and manganese "want to come out of the water by changing the chemical valence of the water." Although arsenic is the most alarming alar-ming of the impurities the mountain water contains, MacDonald said the abundance of iron and manganese coats pipes and reduces flows, frequently fre-quently causing cloudy water. The end result comes out of household taps and in washed laundry that appears ap-pears dirty. ' Once those minerals are taken out, even though they are concentrated, they can safely be flushed into municipal sewer systems. MacDonald said the Filtronics process is unique in North America. The test equipment will be in Park City for about three more weeks, then the tests will be taken to a labratory for further study. City officials are encouraged by the recent findings. "We're ahead of the game instead of playing catch-up, because in the water business you can't play catch- up," said Lind, speaking with regard to the high demands for water now and in the future. "The nice thing about this system is that it would give us the ability to utilize the freeflow free-flow water," he said. "This would give us a very quick pay-back for water as compared to developing new underground sources." r l- -i: -si '111 ) 'i l ft .... ! i : I t ' ' ' Sena Taylor A flip of the switch... Park City Mayor Brad Olch flipped a switch Aug. 2 to turn water from the city's new well near Treasure Mountain Moun-tain Middle School into the municipal water system. Flow from the well is currently running at 1,000 gallons per minute. The well is 225 feet deep and was drilled last June. Although it was equipped for use two months ago, the city wasn't authorized to use it until it received permission permis-sion from the state engineer. That permission came on July 23, when the city was authorized to begin pumping up to 577.7 acre feet of water from that well. The state approved two exchange applications applica-tions for water rights previously tied to the well. The city now will be able to take water out of either or both of its wells up to the total maximum of 577.7 acre feet. Operation of the new well will provide an additional 1.4 million gallons per day production capacity to Park City.
