DEATH OF ELDER L J HERRICK anold and respected resident of of ogden den city departed this life on monay day april at pm by the courtesy of elder joseph stanford we affable to give a brief sketch of his life his biography was written by brother If stanford tenford but lack of space forbids efte tt publication of more than a few allent adient points I 1 jester james herrick was the fourth OH of samuel and sally herrick and was born december 1827 at nel ion on portage county ohio where in in 14 his parents embraced the doepel in I 1 a 1831 they moved to jack won county mo and in 1834 bey I 1 ing driven by a mob went to far ag west est and after further persecution ettlel joett ett led in nauvoo in 1840 they shared bared in all the sufferings of the maints during which his bis mother died the rest of the family after re iff biding ding awhile in missouri crossed the blaino and reached utah in 1850 they went into ogden being amon among 9 he jhb first to settle there and in 1856 brother rother L J herrick was appointed second counselor to bishop E bunker of df the second ward tn in 1858 he be was so appointed pointed sheriff OIL of weber county in he was elected selectman and was reelected elected re for several terms he also served for several years as a police r f man and in 1861 was elected a city aoun councilor ollor the same game year he be was J appointed bishop of the second ward in 1865 he ws elected alderman from e the atie second ward to which office he be was as reelected elected re in 1867 brother herrick in the fall of that amr ear entered into partnership with D M peery in general merchandise in ina 9 he be visited his relatives in the eastern states and was appointed bishop of the church iti bober county holding that office until 1875 1675 la 1871 helas be was elected mayor of ogden city and was reelected elected re for four successive terms in 1873 he WM was called on a mission InIs sion to england where he tempo harily took charge of the european mission during the absence of the president and returned return eU after fifteen montha absence much improved in health in 1877 brother herrick was appointed pint first counselor to divid david H peery in the presidency of weber stake of zion he also engaged in business in the operative cooperative co firm of the consolidated implement company and was w as active in all the public affairs of the city and county falling health occasioned 0 his bis removal for a while to the pacific coast where he be went in 1885 he suffered buffered from throat disease contracted through exposure in early life which develard dev developed elord into consumption returning to 0 ogden a ater ter two years absence he gradually faded until his demise brother herrick was a capable man of affairs courteous yet firm ds da a public officer shrewd and energetic in business wise and capable in church work a kind and indulgent husband and father and a man respected by all classes for his bis sterling qualities he calmly anticipated his demise making full arrangement of his affairs and was attended devotedly by his family during his long indisposition he pawed passed away in peace leaving eight sons four daughters and fifteen grandchildren three children having preceded him into the world beyond by his request the funeral will not take place until three days have elapsed from the time of his bis death we mingle our regrets regret with those of his host of friends at the departure of one who will long be remembered and whose name is identified with the rise an ani J progress of bf ogden city and weber county as well as an the af fairl of the church in which he be prominently figured peace be to the remains of brother L lester ester J herricks Her As evidence of the regard entertained for the deceased the city council of ogden met on monday night adopted the following and adjourned for one week whereas it has plea pleased seil an all wise providence this thi F day to tale away from this sphere of action our respected fellow c citizen lester J herrick and whereas lester J herric herrick Herr iok was ogdena second mayor mavor and the first mayar mayor of ogden who during an existence or 01 courty one years laas has departed this life now therefore it is resolved by the mayor and city council ol of ogden city that this council now adjourn out of respect to the memory of said lester J herrick and that this council attend his bia funeral iti a body and that all ex mayors of ogden be invited to attend also it is further resolved resolve fl that the mayor appoint a corn committee cittee of three members of the council to draft proper resolutions upon the death of said lester J herrick and that said committee also arrange that means of conveyance be furnis furnished bed the city councilors councillors counci lors and ex mayors attending the funeral the funeral services will be held at the ogden Ta bernable thursday april at 2 p pm m and will be under the supervision of his personal friends D H peery joseph stanford and robert whom he selected as a committee to act for his family
