Show WHO DESIGNED THE TEMPLE As THERE has baa been some dispute aa to the designer and architect of the temple in this city we print below a statement mide made by mr william ward for the Ic temple souvenir album v published by the magazine printing COMP company RIly mr ward is now connect ed with the university of utah is ig a reliable gentl gentleman emaD and would not take to himself the credit that belongs to another he says 1 I came to salt lake in 1850 was first employed as aa superintendent of the stone cutting department of the public works afterwards as assistant to truman 0 angell the church architect in that situation I 1 did not design nor assist in designing the temple I 1 did just what I 1 did for any other architect by whom I 1 was a capacity sub in the eastern states li it is true trae that being familiar with stone construction while mr An angella gells experience had been limited th tb that of wood I 1 made out oat many of the details of stonework stone work only on one occasion did I 1 suggest a feature of the general design in the first sketches the windows were set near the outside surface of the walls I 1 recommended that these be set sec in a a considerable distance so that the thickness of the walls and the strength of the structure be prop properly properio eriv indicated dica ted this was adopted it is also true that I 1 drew the original perspective perspective view and that mr angell did id not pretend to any knowledge of this branch of art after leaving here in 1856 I 1 drew perspective views for two leading architects in st louis and also for john frazer of 01 philadelphia none of these gentlemen had learned to draw per spec tive yet their ability as architects was unquestioned the knowledge of per spec ive was wa a rare accomplishment at that time and although quite common now such pictures are no part of the work of design the design was formulated in th the following manner brigham young drew upon a slate in the architects architect le office SL a sketch and said to truman 0 angell there will be three towers on the east representing the president and his two counselors also three similar towers on the west representing the presiding bishop and his two counselors the towers on the east the Melchi sedek arlest priesthood those on the west the caronto preist bood the center towers will be eigher than those on the sides and the west towers a little lower than those on the ice east end the body of the building will be between these and pillars will be necessary to support the floors angell then asked about the height and drew the following vertical section according to brighams Brig hams the basement 16 feet high to contain the font the first story twenty five foet feet high between the pillars but between the pillars and sl si dewalls fifteen ft feet high leaving room for a tier of rooms above the side aisles about ten feet high below the second floor the second story like the first the cons ruction of the root roof was left to mr augell on several foundation and thickness thic knese of if the walls was the subject of conversations but bat I 1 do not roo recollect olIed any talk between brigham and angell in regard to the style ol of the building angels angells An gells idea and aim was to make it different to any other known building and I 1 think he succeeded as s to the general combination the above to is according to my best beat recollection and I 1 believe substantially correct WM WARD it must be evident to everybody who knows anything about the interior of a temple that no ordinary architect could design the various departments and their connections considering the p purpose u for which they were to be constructed acted president brigham young gave the necessary necessary directions for these while he lived and life hia successors have continued to instruct the architect as occasion required after the death of truman 0 angelluis Angell his son T 0 angell angel jr had bad oversight of the work until the appointment of another church architect joseph don carlos young a son of our late jat der whose supervision the building has attained its present degree of perfection and who will countless continue the work until its close it is a grand and beautiful structure and will prove a great attraction to to many thousands of people besides those who knowing its purpose and vs value alue will enter its sacred portals to aid in the work of redemption for the living and the dead |
