president of the norwich conference wm win 8 backhand backham and traveling elders moroni england W M crane J J ward F A ottley job charles W watts john wyatt frank M castleton to F M castleton joseph camp be bell ni C fik W harris john middleton and hiram white at each service brigham Youn young gand and several of the elders bore testimony to their belief in the articles of faith of the church of jesus christ of latter day saints and warned those present to flee from the impending judgments at hand band as revealed by st john in the revelations they especially dwelt upon genuine faith which they con ceded was iwas of no avail without works secondly true repent auoe or the permanent in laying aside of sins thardy baptism or immersion not sprinkling and nd fourthly the laying on of hands for the gift of the holy ghost it may here be incidentally mentioned that so strong is the feeling of this sect that the only effectual baptism is immersion as directed by the new testament that little children are not sprinkled but simply blessedly blessed till they arrive at a proper age for immersion the saints bring forward strong Herip scriptural tural proof in support of their contention in this direction the principal speaker at each service was the president of the mission brigham young in his morning address he said they came from the cone con flues fines of civilization not for personal benefit and not to instruct people in things which they have learned dimbat zo to perfection they came simply simple as messengers of salvation and light they came not to teach a new rel religion igioia they came with the re rest red religion of jesus christ the gospel as he taught it the saints 1 were misunderstood reviled and maligned the book of mormon was nothing more nor less than an account of the dealings of god with his people on the continent of Amer american icae it is historical and religious and bears the same relation to the people on the american continent as the bible does to the people of asia it is the gospel of the son of god restored the prophesied falling failing away has taken place and the restoration has also taken place in our day the stick of ephraim and the stick of judah have bave become one in these days of the latter day saints the saints contended tended that with all their learning aed aad talent the great modern preachers did not understand nor preach the gospel of jesus christ were he to go into st in london and preach the principles of christ as st peter and st paul taught them in reference to the doctrine of baptism he would be hounded out of the place the second coming of jesus christ was not far distant he knew it by revelations given to him and aad his bis brethren they were moved of god to come and warn the nation nation that the day of judgment was at hand did they not do so they would be condemned in the afternoon the holy communion was administered to those who cared to partake of it A solemn prayer was delivered over a platter contal containing n I 1 dg small pieces of bread which were then handed round another prayer was delivered over a decanter of bf water and nd the water thus manc sanctified titled was also igo handed round the he mission preside brigham then pointed 0 that the reason water instead of wl wine was used by them at this ceremony was because they were enjoined by bi scripture to use nothing but what w pure in the ordinance and pure wine win free from adulteration a au iteration could not be provided he also dwelt on the absolute necessity essny for those who took part in the he ceremony to be free from malice towards their fellow creatures he said that the was in commemoration me of the lord J jesus esus christ they were not naked asked to believe that the bread and water were converted into the real flesh and blood of christ he was not such a cannibal as to believe that the same with baptism the water wafer did not wash away sin the efficacy of the rite lay in obedience to scriptural behests in reference to tap dam cism he believed that wickedness was on the increase in the world filings are now viewed with stolid indifference which would have shocked people only 30 years ago in the evening the various elders including elder crane bore testimony that the signs which christ foretold should follow the preaching of the gospel they had bad been fulfilled in their hurch church viz healing prophesying gift of tongues etc the system of government of their church was that ordained by christ himself so that there should be a perfect unity of faith did they see this unity in the hundreds of other denominations which were led by the nose by every wind ot of doctrine the mission president brigham young also delivered a 9 lengthy and stirring discourse recapitulating the points set forth at the previous meet ings and likening the present condition of the earth to the state of affairs in the days when noah commenced to go build the ark he also pointed out that the discovery of america by columbus was by the special i inspiration aspiration of god wh who 0 had desired that america A marioa should be a land for the downcast and persecuted in the course of his bis able and interesting discourse mr young dealt with the question as to what is to become of those who have died and knew not the saving gospel of christ he contended that the scriptures answer the question if people would but search them he said it is recorded that when christ was put to death and his body was burled buried in the sepulcher sepu lober his spirit went I 1 and preached to the capi spirits rits in prison that the door might be opened an I 1 such spirits set free the spirits of all that have died since the creation of the world without the knowledge of Chris christs christea tva gospel are waiting yon yonder derY to have the gospel preached to them christ set the example and every man that lived on earth and received the priesthood went behind the veil and taught the spirits there will be no ceasing of this preaching in the spirit world till every spirit as on OB earth every man has had the opportunity anity of receiving the gospel in the Millen lum which is coming on theearta the earth after the judgments there will be a vicarious labor prepared for those who die without the gospel till the book of mormon came forth a and nd was studied people could never understand the doctrines in the bible st paul asks if thi the dead rise not at all why are ye baptised baptized sed for the dead if any A n will take the book of mormon a prayerful heart they shall have of god that hat it to is true had had such luch testimony the lecturer personally had had it i exiled on all to go to god with an ble heart and leave the rest with M i if people would live god gods Is al code honor would come to the on but god cannot emile on a ie e who will not be moral and re re the light fhe 0 proceedings throughout were in with hymns breathing
