DEATH OF ELDER JACOB GATES our readers will not be surprised to learn that elder jacob jatee senior member of the presiding council of the seventies breathed his last at his hia residence in provo at 1145 p m april 1892 for the following data in relation fon on to the career of the deceased we are indebted to brother john M whitaker secretary of the Seven seventies tier jacob atea gates was born on the ath of march 1811 1911 in st bt johnsbury John abury caledonia county state of vermont HU fathers name was thomas his moth ers name patty his father was a farmer and during the early period of brother gates life he worked on the farm he also worked at the carpenter and joiner trades trade and his hl education was confined to a limited period he married mellie M snow daughter of levi snow and Iju olnia streeter on the of march 1838 and on the of june 1883 he was wa baptized a member of the church 0 of f jecius christ of latter day saints by orson Prat tand was confirmed a mem ber of he returned home and on his hie way stopped at the different points and assisted in the outfitting outwitting out fitting work of companies of saints about to cross the plains in the fall of 1862 he was ordained a member of the first council of seventies while living in st george washington county he was wa a a member of the county court for several years he was also elected a member of the house of representatives of the legislative assembly of the territory to represent the district composed of the counties of washington and kane he was reelected three times to the same effice na melyin the years 1864 65 66 and 67 he was also elected in 1873 a member of the council of the legislative assembly to represent the district composed of the counties of kane and washington on the day of may 1866 he was appointed brigade aid de camp first brigade of the nauvoo legion militia of utah th its iron military district with the rank of colonel of infantry 22 brother gates was a faithful latter day
