Show THE TIMES. November 24. LEADER-GARLAN- 1171. Page t 'It Doosn't Hurt' "I always figured you never get too old to learn," says "Regardless of how old you are, it isn't going to hurt you to learn to do something new." Armed with that philosophy of life a Tremonton couple have become living proof that retirement isn't a' time to retire from life. Mr. and Mrs. John and Evalyn Whisler have been members of the Bear River Valley Senior Center since shortly after it was first organized in 1972. But the term senior citizen hasn't slowed them down. If activity were rated on a 1 to 10 scale, they'd rank about 11. Mrs. Whisler. One of the things they've been learning recently is the art of ceramics. It's come in handy with Christmas time just ahead. r, Since the couple have completed six sets of ceramic nativity scenes with 17 pieces in each set. Each set, if done one at a time, would take two to three weeks. The ceramic sets will be gifts to children and parents. Each piece carries the initial of the creator and the of them," she said, referring to LaRene Napoli, center director and Bonnie Grover ,, an assistant. Bonnie is the one who fires all the ceramics for the senior citizen craftsmen.. .a task that's a trifle hard to keep up with. "If it wasn't for the center," Mr. Whisler said, "the only thing I would do is sit home and read." The pair have always been a pair, they claim. "We've doalways worked together WhiMrs. ing everything' sler said. "When we first married quilting was big," Mr. Whisler recalled. So the pair started quilting together. Last week fudge making date. Someday kids can say, "Gee, Dad made this 40 years ago," Mr. Whisler noted. Mr. Whisler claims his wife is the creative one in the family when it comes to ceramics. "I just do what she tells me," he laughed. Originally from Iowa, the Whislers moved here from Salt Lake City and spent 16 years before that in Las Vegas. Mr. Whisler retired from the railroad. Much of their free time is spent at the center. "I make time to come up here and work," Mrs. Whisler commented. "I don't have any family here and you girls just take the place was on the list of activities. The results vere mailed to a mother for a present. Retirement has turned the couple free to learn new hobbies. Mr. Whisler said he enjoys retirement most listening to the early morning traffic broadcast from an airplane flying over Salt Lake City's congested freeways. He used to be part of the congest- ion. Both are avid fans of the Senior Center program. "I told several guys my own age that they're making a mistake by not belonging to this group," Mr. Whisler said. "There's so many opportunities to pass the time and to learn something while you do it." "Another wonderful thing is the fellowship," Mrs. Whisler added. The couple also attends a class on Indian beading taught at the center and completed an oil painting class last spring. "I'd never oil painted in my life until I took that class," Mrs. Whisler said. He is an avid sports fan and makes time to watch the games on TV. But he and his wife share another hobby often while watching television. "We do a lot of needle point at home," Mr. Whisler said. "So if there isn't a decent TV show on we get out a piece of needlepoint... especially during the baseball game." Baseball is a sport that's too slow for Mr. Whisler. "You can get four to six stitches in between every pitch," he said. "Football and basketball are too fast." Both also make Afghans, Mrs. Whisler pointed out. Mr. Whisler doesn't think that needle point and other sewing arts should be the sole domain of women. He points out a number of retired men who have taken it up. "John's not sitting around Their oldest of three boys constructs and maintains electronic parts for slot machines in Las Vegas, another boy is an electrical engineer for Sierra Pacific Power Co. in Reno, Nevada, and a third is assistant minister of the First Christian Church in Albuquerque, N. someto do," added Mrs. What's next up for the Whisler's? "I'd learn anything up here (at the center) that they'll teach me," Mrs. Whisler said. M.- Their only daughter, form- erly of Thatcher, Mrs. Den- ny (Sandra) Young lives in Wyoming where she and her husband are attending school. complaining about thing Whisler.
