Show THE f&rWS&m'lit Wedding kW7... J - . X, XA Palace l ' Club the (Formerly Mr. and Mrs. Harold Ward of Bear River City announce the engagement and forth coming marriage of their daughter, Lori to Ronald G. Palmer, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Palmer of Tremont- ' j - Has Gone Sugarless Mrs.' Dawn Ficklin of Tremonton, this week's good cook, could be succinctly described as an almost apologetic-goo- d cook. ; For one thing she's a trained dietician so she certainly should know what's good to cook. A graduate of the University of Utah, Mrs. Ficklin interned in St. Louis for a year. A housewife now, she still practices her profession working parttime for the Mountain View nursing home. She also works a couple of days a week in her father-in-law'(Dr. George Ficklin) s, office. ; Mrs. Ficklin isn't apologetic about being but she is rather timid to discuss the fact that she and her family are what.some people jnistakenly call health food bugs'. f. T .,. "We've gone off?sugar recently," she confessed reluctantly in fear of being branded a fanatic. "It's something we just started as a family." "People think you're crazy," she admitted. "It's just so integrated in our society." In place of sugar the family uses honey or sugar substitutes. They've gone mostly to grains, vegetables"... just your basic foods." "There's just nothing good about sugar for your body," Mrs. Ficklin said. Married to a dentist, Larry, Mrs. Ficklin said the family decided to make the a sugarless move after he attended seminary on the subject. Most mothers, she said, "just don't think about it." They buy their kids "lots of convenience foods" but don't think about vitamins and nutrients. Too many are "more concerned about taste and appeal rather than nutrition," she added. Candy coated breakfast cereals rank high on the enemy list. "My husband says people ought to call them breakfast candy," she said. Mrs. Ficklin succeeds at doing something a lot of women only dream of doing. She plans out menus for a month at a time. But rather than making a new one for each month, she just uses the same plan over changing it three or four times a year to fit the seasons and the availability of such things as fresh fruit and vegetables. "The main thing is getting a variety," she noted, "not serving the same vegetables all the1 time. It just takes a little planning... sitting down and figuring it ' , ' out." i7 the WESTERNAffiES 1 257-797- and Ronald Palmer Lor Word SALE be open every Friday until 8 p.m. Til Christmas For Your Shopping Convenience!!! "We've never let them have sugar," she said. "I don't think its been as hard for them as it is for us." "They want it just like everybody does, but they realize and they're conscious that it's not that good for you," she added. Desserts really aren't necessary, she contended. They're "just added calories." "When you have a balanced meal you get all you need," she added. Eating should satisfy hunger, a physical need. Satisfying an appetite is satisfying a psychological need. When they do have desserts, they might consist of an apple pie using honey in place of sugar. "Honey is just as bad for teeth," Mrs. Ficklin admitted,"but I don't think it's as hard for the body." Besides her work and cooking, Mrs. Ficklin is a mother to two children, Spencer, 6, and Christine, 8. She also finds the time to serve as President of the Tremonton Sixth Ward Primary. Her husband Larry is advisor to . the Ventures. . She is also an active member of the Tremonton Women's Civic League, an organization which she directed last year as president. The sugar free diet also has another benefit. Her husband dropped six pounds during the first week the family made the switch. Mrs. Ficklin shares three recipes with our readers which should tempt the stomachs of most but not their sweet tooth. a dietician, Palace) Friday & Saturday night The menu makes it "easy to just glance at that and find out what you need" when Family Silver offers "LIVE MUSIC every The couple will be married on Nov. 26, 1976 at the Palmer residence in Tremonton.
