Show life Varsity-Alum Football Game Looms as "Finest" This year's University of Utah Alumi-Varsity football contest, slated for May 15, at 1:30 p.m. in Ute stadium, is shaping up as the finest early season game in Redskin football history. Already signed up for the alums are Lee Grosscup, New York Giant first round choice; Larry Fields, who just signed with the Vancouver team in Canada; Merrill Mer-rill Douglas, Chicago Bears; and such former Ute greats as Jack Seul, Evert Jones, Dick Bubak, Herb Nakken, Larry Amizich, Don Rydlach, Tiny Grant, Don Peterson, Max Pierce, Bob Lee, John Urses, Jim Mastelotto, Don Kraft, Pete Haun, Lex McKee, Gerald Purdie and Jed Gibson. These are just the players who have indicated they will play and many more are sure to be around when the final Alumni squad is rounded out. Coach Pres Summerhays will direct the Alums and has slated two weeks of workouts and has drawn up a set of plays which will show Grosscup and Rydalch to the best advantage as passers. Summerhays has also indicated that he will depend heavily on the running of Douglas and Nakken. Nak-ken. The Varsity, remembering last year's 19-7 defeat, are going through spring drills with an added enthusiasm. The Alum fray has taken on the complexion complex-ion of a real grudge battle and actually will be more than just a spring recital. The Varsity has slated their ,; first scrimmage for last Satur- j day but were snowed out. How-' ever, Coach Ray Nagel found some real surprises in the first week of drills and still feels his '59 Utes will be an improved ball club. |
