Show I oJXCemo from Rainey ..I Dear Boss-Man: Only as far away as this Saturday Sat-urday is a day of Democratic activity which could well be the kick-off on the exciting, vitally important 1960 elections. With , the weaker (Ha!) sex convening during the day for first annual convention of the Democratic Women's Clubs of Utah, we will wind up in the evening with our Jefferson-Jackson Jefferson-Jackson Day dinner, treated to an address by one of the greatest speakers in our nation. Sen. Hubert Hu-bert Humphrey. Having been slightly involved in the past election I have ample reason to believe that we can well improve our methods of campaigning. I do now speak out and loudly for an efficient campaign organization which is a going concern sometime in advance ad-vance of the election month. I'm not talking about the powers that be. They work all the time. I'm talking about selling the neighbor over the back fence so that she will be anxious and willing to do her part come election elec-tion timerather than be drafted draft-ed into a 24 hour a day race to duplicate the efforts of countless count-less other draftees just like herself. peatedly, "How do people get into in-to politics?" You'd think, with a free press guaranteed us, that every child would know the answer to this one. But it just ain't so. .Comparatively few people do know. It should be one of our biggest jobs to inform the rest of the potential Democrats and voters exactly how "people get into politics." And the enthusiasm and ideas that spring up from newly informed in-formed voters is encouraging and stimulating. Each one of us ought to be able to account for at least a dozen interested voters in the coming months. Imagine increasing our roles by even half that much! This is one of the most fascinating fasci-nating and rewarding activities in the world. And it's open to every one. All you have to do is want to be a part of it. Then any effort, now matter how small, joins the effort of countless of thousands of fellow Democrats and we're on the road to a great victory. I'm excited about the convention, conven-tion, and looking forward to hearing Senator Humphrey at the dinner. I suppose it sounds corny to use the word "thrilling" "thrill-ing" almost as if I were draft- This means there are people to meet and enlist, lists to compile, and groups to organize. How much more sensible to have some one on your block call you and your neighbors, rather than one master list being circulated to women on every block. Then at the last minute those known Democrats are bombarded with countless duplicate calls while the "on-the-fencers" who really need the encouragement and information in-formation are blissfully snoozing in front of the TV. ing an aa ior a meaier marquee but I have never heard such a thrilling speaker in my life. We become so accustomed to the polite platitudes uttered before be-fore audiences by our popular speakers that we seldom catch the things they don't really say. They infer and they speak in generalities about phantom duties du-ties and obligations things we just can't get our fingers on. It all sounds swell and we go along with it but have we learned anything? When the applause has all died down, could you sit It is a safe estimate tnat one city block will include approximately approxi-mately 40 homes. This means that only 40 pieces of literature ought to be allotted to each block all sides of it. This means that if one housewife were given the job of contacting homes on her block she could easily do the job in one day or spread it out over several days without any strain. I believe so strongly in this breakdown of our forces' into small, neighborhood groups. We weld a bond with the friend we see at the corner market, the filling fill-ing station, and the Democratic rally. Repeatedly ringing the same doorbell can still earn only one vote per person. Why not ring more doorbells and do them just enough to get the job done and not wear out our welcome. wel-come. Well, this is the job the women will tackle. This is the job we are best at. What woman becomes be-comes confused enough to mop the same floor five times a day? What woman forgets and cooks two dinners. What housewife gets absent minded enough to pay her bills twice during the down and say to yourself, "This is what needs doing and this is how we could do it?". Of course, some speakers do give you just this information, but they are among the few. Our Senator Moss is one who is direct di-rect and to the point and gives you something to chew on but then he's among the few too. Senator Humphrey will literally literal-ly lift you out of your seat. You will be so doggoned mad when he discusses some of the shortcomings short-comings of our national administration admin-istration and so darned stirred up when he talks about what could be done and so blamed thankful for men of his kind you're never going to forget the Jefferson Jackson Day dinner. Senator Humphrey uses speech as a weapon and he's deadly on the draw! He has vigor and volume vol-ume and a rare courage that allows al-lows him to call a spade a spade and a lousy mess just that. So, if anybody wants to contact con-tact Rainey this Saturday, you'll find me at the new Carpenter's Hall, 120 West 1300 South in Salt Lake from 8:30 a.m. on and at the ' new Hotel Utah Motor Lodge Auditorium along about 6:30 p.m. And just for extra interest, Senator "Ted" Moss and his best gal Phyllis will be there too and guess what? We're entertaining entertain-ing Senator Humphrey's lady during our convention. What more could we ask? Bye for now. Rainey same month? And yet, in effect, this is what we do in the last minute desperation despe-ration of trying to organize and fight a campaign battle. Candidates Candi-dates and donors pay for billions of pieces of wasted literature during every major campaign. No housewife would be guilty of such waste. And the wasted effort ef-fort . Truly, we are better managers man-agers than that. All we need is j leadership and organization. You would be surprised at the general belief that this game of politics is sort of a "closed corporation." cor-poration." As I once asked a good friend of mine I hear re- |
