Show Indian Dancers Will Perform At Youth Council More than 40 Indian dancers will perform approximately 25 authentic Indian dances in a program pro-gram to be presented before the public April 25 at 7 p.m. in the Brigham Young University stadium. sta-dium. The program is part of the Third Annual Indian Youth Council to be held at BYU April 23-25. The dance program, originally orig-inally planned only for those attending at-tending the council, will be open to the public because of the educational edu-cational value of the show. The dances, which will represent repre-sent eight different tribes, are being assembled by Anthony Purley, famous Laguna hoop dancer who has for several years played a major role in the promotion pro-motion and direction of the Flagstaff, Ariz., Indian powwow. pow-wow. Included among the dances will be the famous Devil Dance of the Mescalero Apache, the Laguna's Butterfly and Deer dances, the Navajo Yei-bi-chai and Granding Chants, and the Jemez Eagle and Buffalo dances. The Laguna Deer Dance has never before been performed off the reservation. - Of special interest will be a dance group from the Nambe Pueble in Northern New Mexico which has never been presented in ceremonies away from home. They will also bring the Yellow Corn Dance and the Turtle Dance as well as the Antelope Dance which can be performed only once every seven years. 0N Between dances a brief narration nar-ration and explanation of the dances will be given and following follow-ing the program the public is invited in-vited to join with the Indians in social dancing. |
