Adoption of a resolution Instructing In-structing the city legal department to cooperate with the health department de-partment to provide an ordinance under which the "highest grade of pure raw milk" may be distributed distrib-uted for eltlsena desiring It Adopted by a four to one vote. 4. For "filing" of 10 petitions, . carrying signatures of hundreds of citlsens and professional men, protesting an ordinance which will ban distribution of raw milk. It was favored by a unanimous vote. The resolution setting further the position of a majority of the com mission regarding prohibition of raw milk and paving the way for enactment enact-ment of the new ordinance Increasing Increas-ing sanitary regulations of raw milk, states In part: "Whereas, the United States public health service does not Insist upon compulsory pasteurisation of all milk for the reason that such a position po-sition would be contrary to the principles prin-ciples of public health statesman ship la that no public health movement move-ment can proceed faster thaa the health education of the public; and "Whereas, large numbers of the Inhabitant of gait Lake City arc demanding de-manding the right to use raw milk and many of them contending that a pasteurisation of milk adversely affects Its hsalthfulness and growth-promoting growth-promoting capacities ; and "Whereas, some physicians of Salt Lake City arc prescribing raw milk for their patients. Measlutl AnaeavaJ "Now, therefore, be tt resolved by the board of ooaimiasloosrs that tt does not at this time favor the complete com-plete pasteurisation of all milk sold or consumed within the corporate limits of the city; that the law department de-partment of the city be Instructed to cooperate with the board of health and the health department of the cKy with a view of providing any and all sanitary regulations necessary neces-sary to produce the highest grade of pure raw milk for the benefit of those Inhabitants of the city whs desire to use raw milk." 1 The resolution was sponsored by Commissioner Oeorge D. Keyaer and supportsd by Commissioners William Wil-liam Murdoch, P. H. Goggln and John B. Matheson. Erwia Opposed Mayor Erwln opposed the resolution resolu-tion and was the sole supporter of the originally proposed ordinance prohibiting distribution ef raw milk within cut months. The mayor qualified his vote oa the resolution as follows: "1 favor any steps which Increase aaintary regulations governing milk or any food product. That la why I favor the originally nroeosed ordl- nancs banning raw milk. I cannot consistently vote for prohibition of raw milk and vote also for a substitute sub-stitute measure which I have not seen." |
