Show State Barriers To Trade Unprecedented industrial and commercial development of the United States, as well as the highest high-est standard of living in the world, are attributed by many observers to the fact that the area of the forty-eight states was, at i one time, the largest free trade area in the world. j We say "at one time" because of the trend in recent years for j states to erect barriers to trade ! from other states. While the Con- j situation bars a state from levy- ing tariffs on imports and exports and from discriminating against the commerce, shipments and citizens of other states, there is hardly a commonwealth that has not devised some regulation to; promote the use of materials made "at home". Truckers have been hard hit by regulations and many products have been serious-j ly affected. Butter, margarine, poultry, eggs, citrus fruits and numerous farm items are involv- j ed and more than a score of states . give special aid to wine producers' within their borders. Those who have given the subject sub-ject some study seem to think that the trend toward barriers to tree trade between the states has been checked by publicity given to the subject by the National. Conference on Interstate Trade Barriers last July. The Council of i State Governments has set upj machinery to improve the situation situa-tion and Secretery Hopkins proposes pro-poses the formation of an interdepartmental inter-departmental committee of Fed-( eral agencies to study and combat state trade barriers. |
