Show Canker Free Tomato Developed By Utah Plant Pathologist Disease resistent tomatoes have been developed at the Utah State Agricultural college plant laboratories labora-tories during a series of experiments experi-ments just completed, according to Dr. H. Loran Blood, plani pathologist for the U. S. Department Depart-ment of Agriculture. Dr. Blood says work is progressing progress-ing at present on methods for the eradication of the Western Yellow Yell-ow blight and the verticillium wilt, two dreaded diseases that annually infect the tomato fields. After spending nine months of research in South America, Dr. Blood produced plants which were entirely immune to the canker. can-ker. Since this development, the cacterial canker has disapeared entirely. Employed by the United States Department of Agriculture and working in cooperation with the Utah agricultural experiment station, Dr. Blood represents the division of fruit and vegetable crops and disease which is associated as-sociated with the bureau of plant .ndustry in Utah. Work of this division is primarily concerned with diseases in tomatoes. |
