Show some incidents sin in the life of my moth mother mrs etta E whitehouse 4 4 bit q 10 1 L III I I 1 1 ai za 11 V al V 4 f V N 0 ava j tu IVA W 1 aff 5 7 ac mrs etta eliason whitehouse is a native pioneer and was bom born in grantsville Grants ville tooele thoele county utah on january 1 1868 A daughter of andrew eliason and christena carlson her father and mother were converts to the latter day saints church from sweden and travel ed by ok team to utah a journey which took six months they arria ed in grantsville Grants ville in 1863 eight children were born to them two buried on the plains while coming to zion etta being the youngest of eight four boys and four girls is the only surviving member of her family her mother died when she was thirteen months old and annie erickson took etta and cared for her until her father remarried which was two years later she remembers living in a four room log house until she was a bout ten years old when a new rock house was built by james hammond father of george ham mond she can remember sitting in the swing and playing while he was building this house mr hammond also built the tooele thoele first ward church house and the old city hall both still in use the old toc rock home still stands in grantsville Grants ville and is in good condi tion ion and mrs whitehouse says that part of the walls of the old adobe school house where she went to school located west of grantsville Grants ville first ward church are still standing walls built for protection she also remembers the walls built in grantsville Grants ville as protection a the indians she said that as a girl she used to herd cows all day long with other girls in her father fathers s pasture and remembers taking the cows down through lover s lane or cooley s lane and she said some times they would milk the cows a little and put it in a bucket or pan until cool and cream had formed on the top then they would drink the milk their folks not knowing one evening while coming home with the cows she and her chum went into a field of very pretty yellow squash and decided to take one home for their play house they cut it in naif half each taking one piece when ettas step mother observed the squash and learned where it had come from she made etta return it to the field this was one lesson that she never forgot exchanged eggs for candy another thing she remembers well is herding the chickens after school and as a reward she would receive one egg each day she saved these eggs until she had accumulated several and would then exchange them for candy at the grocery store her mother and father used to be in charge of the ward fast of fermes which was any kind of produce people raised and when she was a little girl she would go with her father to deliver this to people who needed it etta can remember her first train ride when she was about 11 years old and the sunday school had an excursion to salt lake city they went in wagons to the point of the mountain near great salt lake from grantsville Grants ville and there met the tram train it was one of the first trams without doors and the sides where the seats were were very low A show was held in the old salt lake theater which they attended continued next week hostess to members of her club was mrs lee anderson at an 8 clock dessert luncheon wednes day evening ten club members were present returning recently after having lived in michigan for the past two years to make their new home in grantsville Grants ville are mr and mrs rob ert leet accompanied by their son earl hansen they are the daugh ter and son in law of mrs fan ennis |
