Show very ancient at dese deseret et mountain B C D E t of at f I 1 N V 0 0 1 sz W 0 3 D ww 4 T 00 0 0 lin line 1 I from A to E sh shows aws the human forms beginning with the very primitive at al to a cornute man over a snake at dl DI and to a rainbow youth at el line 2 begins at A with a more nicely designed rainbow youth form consisting of two arcs of a rainbow for headdress and the snake a water emblem associated with him ba shows two dancers taken from different rocks tocks and put in that one panel the upper one is cornute and has two arcs of crescents in bis his hands a small goat or deer near him the other man is ing the or turkey in clifford ashby took me on sun day september 28 to the south east side of desert mountain a bout 35 miles north of here we were searching for the elusive hump backed flute player glyph described by prof A B reagan of ine BYU as being there although we missed that glyph we found several hundred others bome very very ancient and very dim some later and more easily seen and subject to photograph ing and a tew lew so pecked that they were well preserved looked fresh and new and might oe ie of later date desert mountains are really two mountains that on the east of cark color weathering smooth and highly polished with desert varn ish patina the mountain on the west is a light gray granite and weathers in such a manner as to make is impossible for the ancient indian to on it no patina we found many primitive glyphs a poorly drawn glyph of a snake very ancient many deer or goats a couple of marks exactly like an the straw with an oval thing in one hand and crescent in the other in ca and one figure in da are shown variant forms of the humpbacked flute those in ca are marked with an A to signify that they are from groups found in arizona and the one in da is marked with a V as having been photographed by me near vernal utah with a very lively imagination a very lively one there are ia a couple of glyphs at deseret mountain which by straining hard could be interpreted as being of the humpback but I 1 will not claim that is the intent as so much has to be put into the glyph the arrow on a shaft a fine ram rain sign but vertical with falling rain pen dant for one line and clouds sur mounting the other line if hon hori contal this would pass as a hopi alter emblem so well executed is it several four directions signs N W S E A round bodied man a variant of the bisected oval which is found seventy one times southwest of deseret A form of man with arms outspread strut ting along in high gleea very dainty well execl ed man with a double rainbow for a head with rays on the upper arc toes and fingers this small glyph is ex and it alone well worth the trip three concentric circles nicely drawn A circle divided into six equal parts one for each space region N W S E up and down all the four direction sign was often encountered A man with a snake below height of man to snake 36 inches this was a dandy and on the same stone what may be a shield with fringe we found G M pay nephi dec dee 25 1909 and on another stone what we thought was dr most I 1 can say is there are 2 glyphs of a man with a line from his face but very crude ill drawn and no plainly denoted humpback in ba a fine sun emblem over a snake and a cloud symbol in the upper right in da the oval with a line through it is one of the variants of which 71 ex amples are found southwest of deseret at ea 3 a fine cloud sym bol and ram rain sign but standing vertically note the 4 direction sign like a cross in ea and the circle in da neatly divided into six parts forthe six directions N W V S E up and down L holman 1 but 1 it was almost I 1 am m possible to make anything out of it I 1 found two small dainty nicely done glyphs which I 1 take to be of the rainbow youth one has a two arc are rainbow tor for headdress and the other a single arc rainbow in one place a rainbow alone the trip was one of the nicest I 1 have taken and even if we did miss the hump backed flute play er yet there was an ample variety of other interesting glyphs for the lack of that one the glyphs were so close to the road in places that once the car was within four feet of one again I 1 another about twelve feet and the dainty big man and shield only about sixty feet from the car I 1 thoroughly enjoyed the search and will go again WE WENT A SECOND TIME on sunday october 19 clifford ashby curt shields and I 1 went there a second time we found a man painted by the whites on a rough much weathered granite surface with the date 1818 the man was 0 naughty naughty the date t fool anybody by the side of it was a deer in rapid flight head drawn back ant lers flowing backward knees doub led under the brisket as the am mal was hurled by the hind legs into a mighty leap the hind legs flowing out behind like graceful streamers it was dated 09 but the drawing doesn t fool a soul bonneville SHORE LINES what I 1 take to be a lake bon neville shore line is cut on the east mountain about the right height up two areas of slide rock run down to it in different places A cross the neck of the valley there to the east at the foot of the hills was a perfectly straight line ap parent ly at the proper height for the provo water level it was so remarkably emar kably straight even and veil well defined that I 1 took a long ange range photo of it hoping I 1 might get et something it could be the uniform height to which sediment was deposited in that bay or area of the ancient lake either the pro vo level or such an even line of sediment laid down in irk still water with no estuaries dumping loads of gravel into it in heaps would give such a uniformly straight line at the distance we were viewing it we ran across the name G M pay nephi dec dee 25 1909 A big rock had tumbled down from a high ledge landed on its nose and the sudden impact split that rock in two with about a foot space between clifford got a good picture of it that total rock mass of the two halves would easily weigh between 80 and tons right close to it a nicely drawn man 36 inches from the top of his head to the snake he is standing over and a fine lot of glyphs on the side of the split rock four periods of pecking on the stone some very old the man of later date then a very interesting thing the ancient indians had pecked a large rock with a rather extensive group of glyphs frost or other causes had broken a big chunk of that rock mass from the main mass and it fell about six feet a way right side up but turned a round the piece showed t that hat it would fit if put back it may have broken out after prof A B an of the BYU visited the spot in 1935 as his writing of the visit does not indicate that one piece of the series was six feet removed from the rest I 1 think he would have mentioned it had it then been broken clifford carried a small slab of rock with two very dainty little men pecked on it to where we ate lunch intending to take it home as an exhibit piece but we went oft off without it A good excuse for go ing back again it was a very fin fine specimen and he will I 1 think eventually get it it showed a warrior standing and having slain his foe for the other was flat on his back we could lust just barely distinguish Pa livant butte in the far distance south in the haze obscuring all things the hot plug was about 12 to 15 miles to the west of us we ran across the initials I 1 L D 1913 there are hundreds and hun deeds of glyphs up there all are pecked the rock is dark in color said by reagan to be it develops a very fine desert varn ish or patina pecking through that contrast is obtained by the lighter color beneath the varnish so old were the glyphs that in many cases the desert varnish was well advanced into the pec kings obliterating them I 1 wall quote reagan the writings show great age the drawings of the humans are practically all made by the square shouldered pattern of true basket maker age and are certainly very old that from a professor at the BYU the basket maker age is from 1500 B C to a bout A D so if so held the most ancient of these glyphs might possibly run to about 2 2000 years old these glyphs are in the northern end of Pa livant valley but be yond our border as they are in juab county we shall claim them as ours the findings well paid for th the e two trips and all of us benj enjoyed oy e d the result very much I 1 took sixty pictures and clifford 24 |
