for a revision of utah s big game laws and said we do not aavo cate destruction of big game but deem it imperative that big game management be improved other resolutions called for more severe penalties for trespassing exten sion of the hunting season per nuts mits to kill two deer instead of one in some areas and they also ask for damage payments from the fish and game department look at those resolutions no not asking for the destruction of our big game they adopted adoth er resolution calling for the fish and game department to cease planting any more big game until it is definitely recommended by the board of big game control you can see through that cant you youa this board is controlled by the cattle and sheep interests and naturally they would not becom I 1 mend any further planting or trans f erring ferring of our big game this as also went on record rec ammend ng opposition to any fur ther acquisition of land by the fed eral government and the creation of additional national parks on the public lands question th they ey re main firm on the policy of placing public lands into private owner ship mighty nice resolutions aren t they what a wonderful country this would be if the cattle and horse growers grower s association con i trolled everything at the conclude ing session of this convention they elected their officers for the corn com ing year among the officers elect ed was mr L C montgomery of heber he was re elected president read the above resolutions over a gain and then remember this same mr montgomery is on the board boar d of big game control and has been for the past twenty years Is it any wonder that the sportsmen h have ave such a fight on their hands when meeting with this board mr floyd thompson fed federal feral agent for the fish and wild L life ife service just called me on the phone to report his findings on the goose situation at timpie springs he reports that the geese there were suffering from tion and his opinion was this the geese were on their way north when that last cold spell hit they stopped over at timpie but the cold continued and everything in that area was frozen over they could find nothing to eat he ile said that he opened the stomachs of some of the dead birds and there wasn gasn t a trace ot of food to be found in others he found only very small amounts of dry grass all in all they found about twenty geese that had died of starvation he said that the geese were not our utah geese but were the lesser canadian honker which nests a way up in the arctic circle mr thompson was of the opinion that this same thing is happening every year at timpie and he was quite concerned about it there Is not enough feed there to take care of our migratory birds so he said he was going to make a report to washington and see if he could rit get something done about the sit bation it might be that they can get it set aside as a refuge if this could be done they would really build that area up mr thompson as well as the state game depart ment were right on the job look ing into the situation down there they are to be congratulated for the fine work they did they were preparing to feed the geese when the weather broke and geese were able to gam gain enough strength to take off mr gr thompson wishes to thank all the tooele thoele county sports men who helped him to gather his data on this problem latest reports indicate another reduction in the bag limit for ducks next year this came as somewhat of a sur prise to me as I 1 expected that with an election coming up that they would increase the bag limit get what I 1 meana mean the utah fishing season for 1948 1943 will open june 12 and will close october 3 fishing hours to be from 5 00 a ni until 9 00 p m dally daily it was announced by the game dir lector ross leonard following the quarterly session of the utah fish and game commission daily bag limits for trout in utah will remain the same as in 1947 15 fish or seven pounds or one fish whichever is caught first the possession limit this year will be cut in half and will become the same as the daily bag take the opening dates as set by the five man commission apply to the general opening the high ustah lakes and streams will open as usual after the native spawning run is finished july 1 other cial openings will be covered by state proclamations bass season will begin may 15 and end october 3 these dates al so apply to perch and sunfish lim its on bass will be the same as for trout except that it is unlawful to keep bass under ten inches mm min icum length for trout is seven inches as always the big reduction in the posses sion limit by the commission was based on two factors conserva tion and law enforcement accord ing to mr leonard the rapidly in creasing pressure on utah s limited fishing waters has made it feces sary to curtail possession limits in an effort to spread the fish sup ply to a greater number of fisher men it Is also expected that the cutting of the possession limit will eliminate many of the law enforce meat ment problems in the higher lakes where it has been claimed that daily catches of 30 fish have been made and held out as possession limits while fishing continued |
