Show rites swat tooele thoele 40 24 to tie for jordan league title ater stampeding their way through eight consecutive victories in the jordan league and looking for all the world like undisputed champs of the loop tofele tooele s white buffaloes suddenly found the going tough and dropped two lop sided decisions in a row the last defeat coming at the hands of the up and coming murray smelter ites friday by the score of 24 40 this pulled the buffs down to a tie for the title bunting this last game of the regular loop schedule was a must for both teams tooele thoele needed the win to cinch the title and murray want ed the victory to avoid a play off with cyprus for the right to corn com pete in the state class B bourna ment murray had it tooele thoele did n nt t is just about the best way to sum up the game and were not riot stretching the point a bit when we say that murray was the best class B cage aggregation we have seen all year as they set up an air tight defense around their has ket and nearly drove the buffs crazy trying to figure out which Smelt ente erite would be next to crack through their defense and ring up two points rites catch fire nifty nobora iwami got the buffs off to a flying start with a beautiful shot from outside the foul circle but from then on the game was all murray except for a brief flurry I 1 by ay tooele thoele in the latter stag es of the game verdean anderson aid and art burzler quickly pulled the Smelt entes rites back in the ball game with a couple of lightning fast lay up shots and the whole murray team caught on fire never to be headed or even pressed for the re nTa inder of the contest murray ran the score up to 10 2 before loren dunn dunked in a two pointer before the end of the first quarter to make the score read 10 4 As the second quarter got under way iwami and hamilton hit to bring the lighted reading up to 8 10 but that was as close as the buffs could get and the remainder of the period was all murray as johnny woods art gurzler and anderson hit for 10 points to make the halftime score 20 8 for mur ray 1 mm B buffs u effs bally rally falls short the same three boys continued to pour coal on the fire in the third canto with hamilton iwami and bleazard carrying the scoring bur den for tooele thoele it was almost an even ball game but murray just let tooele thoele gain any ground and this period ended 32 17 tooele thoele just wouldn t say quit and for a time in the last period they staged a rally which saw them pull up to within 9 points of the high flying Smelt entes rites but the brief flurry of baskets was cut short and quick baskets by burz ler walker and anderson of mur ray nullified the effort and mur ray had ther their victory and a tie for the title a 40 24 win over too ele for murray the win can be trac ed to a well coached evenly bal alced team that has gained mo with every passing game in verdean anderson the league s leading scorer they have one of the smoothest high school has ketelers in the state and in little art hurzeler they have a ball hawking fire ball that is out of this world no excuses offered for tooele thoele they were beaten by a better team and neither the writ er the coach or the players offer any excuses for tooele thoele s loss how ever it is our opinion and we are not alone in this that the of ficia ting during this ball game was by far the worst we have seen all year max player was the referee and he turned in a nice job in spite of tommy morgan who was sup posed to be the umpire in this con test apparently morgan has out side interests its it s a fact that he wasn gasn t much interested in the con test as he was reluctant almost to the point of ignoring the play ers on the floor in a game that had as much at stake as this one did the action gets pretty rough at times in this contest it got TOOELE MURRAY 3 lee anderson IS 15 2 Leat leatham harn hurzeler 11 II 2 dunn barnett 2 6 iwami walker 3 7 hamilton woods 8 4 bleazard Blea zaid bergen I 1 0 rupp 0 gilespie 0 griffith 24 TOTALS 40 score by quarters murray 10 20 32 40 tooele thoele 4 8 17 24 awfully rough but morgan was more interested in seeing that the tooele thoele contestants didn dian t have the numeral I 1 on their jerseys than he was in keeping beeping the ball game in hand he called a couple of fouls during the game and real ly turned whistle happy in the last half of the game when he cal led two fouls on murray one in the third quarter and one in the fourth period thanks to player the 9 game ame was kept from turning into a sack rush but morgan sup posing we just forget him if we can tooele thoele team hampered AH all was not all dark for tooele thoele an and d there were some encouraging phases of the game despite the defeat charlie lee was hampered by a sprained ankle and could rit pivot or stop as short as he would have liked to but in spite of this handicap he turned in a ful game iwami and hamilton tried desp artely to keep the buffs in the game with six and seven points respectively mostly on long shots but the inability of the bal ance of the squad to hit the hoop proved to be just too much of a load to carry george bleazard BIe azard turn ed in a creditable performance once he got in the fracas and its en possible that coach john son has discovered a new found scoring punch in the person of bleazard the tooele thoele got away to a big lead over the murray second team and up until the third period it looked like they were going to win going away but with 10 mm min lutes utes remaining in the ball game larry stevenson was ejected from the game via the foul route and murray staged a brilliant rally in the fourth quarter to capture the tilt 33 26 there was a mix up at the ers table ana ancl larry was put out of the game when tie he committed his fourth f foul the error wasn gasn t dis covered until after the game and by then it was much too late lar ry was having one of his better nights out there on the floor and his loss had a decided effect on the outcome of the contest it looks like anything can and usually does happen in tooele thoele BOX SCORE |
