others I 1 too was shocked but not sur those of us who have trav aled the road recently need no one to tell us how dangerous it is and it is only a wonder that more peo pie haven t been killed already there is a story of drinking and speeding in connection with this latest and worst accident but no body can tell me that a person has to be drunk or ng erces fast to have a wreck on this stretch of road for it can happen to the most sober person keeping well within the speed limit the road is narrow and while that a lone is enough to cause some dan ger it is also bumpy full of holes and wrinkles and a light car can be thrown out of control very easily by hitting some of these bad spots just right they term the ogden salt lake highway the ribbon of death and the death strip but ask steady drivers which road they would ra ther drive upon and most of them will say they prefer this stretch of highway to the one in our coun ty people can be told how bad and how dangerous a highway may be but nobody moves off his haunches to do anything about it until someone has been killed so now no matter how much work the state highway puts in on the wendover strip no matter how good of a highway they make it those five people who died sunday will never be brought back to life again tooele thoele county now has a death strip of its own and besides that a new record for a single car high way disaster and what a record that is the people of tooele thoele coun ty would give anything if they did not have that record andy roberts in his story of the tooele thoele murray game last friday took a couple of cracks at one of facial a mr morgan after the game I 1 saw several fans arguing with this man telling him just what they thought of his official ing I 1 am told this is not the first time morgan has received corn plaints from not only the tors but the players and the coach es similarly I 1 saw some of the murray rooters go to him after the game and pat pa him on the back and tell him he sure called a good game I 1 hate to see anyone abuse an official but as for arguing after the game that s a mans man s active I 1 could see murray was the best team on the floor friday night but I 1 could also see other things I 1 could see morgan a short man himself psychologically feel ing sorry for the smaller boys on the floor so whenever there was any roughness he d just call a foul against those mean old tall fellows another thing I 1 saw in morgan land I 1 ive ve seen it in other officials this season he still thinks we are still fighting japan and that anyone who is of japan ese descent is not good enough to play ball with our american boys to this man and others like him let me say I 1 fought against the japanese along with 12 mil lion other guys during world war II 11 I 1 saw plenty of japs sharn bos nips whatever you wanted to call them when I 1 got back to the states I 1 saw some more only these japs they were A mexicans me ricans of japanese descent and just as much american as you and I 1 the record of japanese service men who fought for this country is very enviable and was almost unequalled by other outfits their casualty rate was among the high est of any of the divisions no one can doubt they fought their best for the united states but that is all over now they home like the rest of us who went away they have cast aside their uniforms for civilian garb and have settled down like all good americans to raise a family and have some of the comforts of life some of them have brothers and sons some of those boys play football and basketball and other sports for their schools and most of them have proved a definite asset to their team nobody can deny that tooele thoele s japanese amen can boy it one of the most popular players on the team yet some of our officials do not realize this they still are judging every person of japanese ancestry by the acts of those across the sea they are hasty to con condemn denin slow to forgive and they delight officials who un fortun abely have been hired by the jor dan league he has had many fouls called on him unjustly this year the officials may think they are making points with the people and the opposing team may think the officials are calling them right but the boys on the team and all the kids at school arent fooled they still think nob is a good player a good sport and a good tad lad to found out the boy went to the official and apologized told him he was wrong for doing it and offered to pay for the man s glasses it t take much of a man to do something wrong but it takes a good one to admit it and apologize anyway the incident has been forgotten and both parties back on better terms which is the way it should be in sports A fellow told me the other day he was fined 5 00 for having cal plates on his car he said he was told but not politely that a person coming into utah must have utah plates 5 days after he has arrived here he further relates that he asked the officer why someone didn t stop him at the state line and make him acquaint ed e d with this fact he realized he s said aid that ignorance of the law is no excuse but still nobody told him about the 5 day law conclude ing his 1113 story he said I 1 im in going to put a piece of black tape across that part of my new license plates that reads THE FRIENDLY STATE because that s the worst I 1 ve heard yet I 1 would like to blot mine out too but not for the same reason he would I 1 think the expression is the most trite over used unexpressive slogan I 1 ve ever heard why not just say THE WESTERN STATE or something equally vague every one of the 48 regards itself as friendly I 1 should think the state could find a better slogan than that As one man puts it why don t they just say made in the state prison they say you should always keep one step ahead of your children I 1 find I 1 have a hard time even keep ing one step behind mine 0
