Show TELEGRAM'S IRRtGATION EDITION. On the third of September next, coincident with the convening at Boise of the great Irrigation congress, con-gress, THE TELEGRAM! wilLissue an irrigation edition. It is proposed to thoroughly illustrate the whole subject of irrigation, to make clear its prog-. prog-. ress,' the part taken by different States and countries, coun-tries, the work of the Government in reclamation, with' papers from every distinguished author that has ever written upon the subject,' The life of the land in this interior basin' depends upon artificial "moisture. This fact alone raises the science of irri- Ration into qne only second in importance to mining. Indirectly and ultimately it is of iuore importance than even mining, for. where 100 acres can be re-. re-. deemed from the waste and ' converted into a fruitful fruit-ful field, that means a comfortable and profitable home for a family for all future time. Again, when the subject is thoroughly under-istood under-istood and the application of the science becomes general, gen-eral, it is manifest that, through irrigation, much land outside the arid belt can be made to yield twice ' as much as it is now yielding, and the prevalence of short crops will be vastly reduced. . The purpose of THEf TELEGRAM is to emnha- size the importance of the Boise congress and to help awaken a more general interest in the reclamation recla-mation of the vast areas of now barren'soil between rthe Rocky " and Sierra- Nevada mountains. |
