Show PLANS COLONIZATION Of ITALIANS IN WEST POR AGRICULTURAL PURPOSES . The Rev, Joseph AlbarellL late of Bo-V Bo-V -ailtaly.'.Dutjitffth past few montha 'competed with Mount- Carmel' church ..In Denver has Just returned to the Colorado capital from a trip through Utah, Nevada Neva-da and California, where he went In the Interests of a new colonization scheme looking toward the location of Italian agriculturists In this country. The plan Is interesting the South and West of the United States, as well as the Italian Government. Gov-ernment. Father Albarelll will send his reports home Jo the "Awenlre d'ltalla" of Bo-- Bo-- logos, the most Important Catholic pa-' pa-' per In Italy, and the BattagUs d'Oggl of Naples, for both of which he Is special correspondent. He Is particularly inter ested In 'the new -emigratioa movement, being allied in- Italy to the Catholic Democrats, Dem-ocrats, a party not socialistic, but which stands for the Working classes. "There has been a great deal ef agitation agita-tion in favor of the South for our people," said Father Albarelll to the Denver Post, "and the Italian Government paid Cav. FornI, the Consul at New Orleans, $10,000 for a report on conditions In the South. Personally I favor the West, with Its excellent ex-cellent climate and Its new Irrigation projects, destined to make It the greatest agricultural belt In the country. The South Is too warm and humid; is subject to floods and cyclones; and wages there are much lower than those paid In the West. Here the miners receive $4 and $5 a day, while the common laborer on the railroad gets from 11.65 to $2, as against 75 cents, the highest wage paid in the South. Then, In the South the Italian Is classed with the negro, whereas everywhere every-where in the West I find him In good social so-cial standing. "The Italian press of the East Is opposed op-posed to colonization In the South and is now coming forward with a strong fight for the West. Having resided here for some months, I am flfcirally in favor of Colorado, with its Ideal climate, but of the three States I visited, California seems to me the Ideal spot. "It Is very similar In many respects to Italy, having practically the same climate, cli-mate, railing the same products, and even resembling my country as to Its mountains and valleys and the general lay of the land." |
