Show CHAMP CLARK, .REAL CZAR , Congressma;i Joseph Howell beforo his departure for Washington ,ln response re-sponse to a hurry up call, gave out the following interview to a reporter of one of the big state dallies: '"I am going back to Washington to be In tlmo to receive the committee reports of senate measures, I do-not, however .anticpate nny further legislation legis-lation this session. If, .however, such legislation should be forced through, I believe that President Taft would-bo thoroughly Justified In vetoing IL This is In vie'w of the fact that a properly organized tariff board Is In the field to ixrovide the Information that Is required and to proceed In an orderly manner This board is provided provid-ed with all tho necessary machinery arid can roport the sort of legislation that is really needed. There is plenty of tjmo to wait for this report and for that reason. If for no other, I feel that the country will uphold Mr. Taft In shutting down .upon any attempts to force through 111 considered tariff legislation at this time. "Should the attempt bo made, it will nlso encourage tho would-be tariff reformers re-formers to nssault other schedules und 1 would then look for one on tho metal schedule In particular. This would only result in an Indefinitely piolonged session. I feel, howovcr, that the programe ns announced in the spring will stand and that Mr. Taft will abide by his decision. "No, this has not been n paitlculai-l ly lively session. Many of the members mem-bers of tho house have been absent a good deal of the time and there has been much that was little more than routine. Onc'thlng, I will say .that the Democratic machine In the house Is working perfectly smooth and Is as well oiled as ever waH machine. Talk about Czar Heed or Cannonlsm! Why the machine as It now stands beats anything ever carried out under Republican Re-publican control of the house. Calendar Calen-dar Wednesday, suppose! to be established es-tablished as a means of getting through legislation that might have been shelved, has been Ignored as nlso nl-so has Mondays, which were set apart as suspension and discharge days for consideration of committee reports and discharge of committees. These have been passed over by adjournments and have been generally Ignored all through the present session. Neither Heed nor Cannon ever carried out the majority rule In such highhanded rnshlon as has the Democratic major Ity under Champ Clark during the present session." |
