One of the best green foods for win ter Is sprouted oats. As a laying feed wheat Is cheap at twice the price of corn. Oats, wheat, bran and middlings are good egg-producing foods. Do not attempt the use of artificial artifi-cial heat In the poultry house. It is known that too much water) vegetable matter will lower the egg yield. Too liberal feeding of fresh meats is apt to make fowls irritable and cross. j For chicks on free range cracked corn can be fed alone with good results. re-sults. For laying hens It is better to have the corn cracked rather than to feed U whole. No other green food Is needed during dur-ing the winter if the fowls eat up tht alfalfa. A few crystals of sulphate of iron in the drinking water is a good thing for the fowls. It Is a bad plan to use any birds for breeders that have ever been seriously se-riously ill with roup. Arrange to have the houses and yard so that the hens can have sunny and protected places on cold days. Corn meal mixed with skim milk and fed three times a day, all the lowls will eat, is one of tie best fat tening diets ever tried. Skim milk contains a variety ol food elements in ideal proportions fot p-f production, and the feed is eastl digested and assimilated. |
