Show f , Whatever popularity Congressman Howells m may have had 1 being rapidly dispelled since the Bf Cache county statesman intruded upon the guber- B natorial pasture to aid Mr. Smoot in nominating E i J. C. Cutler. Had Mr. Howell remained neutral on Bj that question, there would havo been no doubt of Bj if his cenominatlon, but now as a result of his un- B 'i vyelcome 6nlcipusnes.s, he is confronted with the B spectral figure of a new candidate for congressional B nom.lna.tlon. His action is tieing up the Cache county B delegation in Cutler's interest is most strongly re- B sen tad by the followers of Secretary Hammond, B who, under normal conditions, could have counted B upon strong support from his home county. If B Mr ,Wel s is nominated, as the political signs of B the times indicate, Mr. Howell may look for scant Bj courtesy fiom the friends of Hammond and Wells B in the convention, and there is already a strong B sentiment in favor of the nomination of Ham- B rcond for congress In case of Cutler's defeat. Mr. Bf Hammond is in nosens a candidate for the B i , coijgcessloilal nomination, but if his gubernatorial B i, aspirations are blinked out, it is not in the least H i likely that he will make an effort to curb the B strong sentiment in favor of his nomination fop B congress Altogether the political status of Mr. H Howeh is peculiarly precarious and his defeat in H the convention would not only be a, wholesome B and well merited rebuke, but would be the occa- H sion for great jubilation among tfie friends of H Wells and Hammond throughout the state. Other people have been galled by the Smoot-Callister-Anderson political yoke, and it looks as though Howell will learn that he can not wear it either with comfort or impunity. |
