Show p B' i sporting Life. B Jerry McCarthy's victory over Mose Lafon- B S , tise was a great surprise to the fight followers of B I the land of the Amalgamated, who had not been H I; ' suiliciently advised of the great improvement B I' shown by the local lad in recent months. It does Bfl not appear, though, that Jerry's victory was par- Bf j ticularly decisive, and it is probable that a fight B of longer range will be scheduled between the two Bfj in the near future. McCarthy was always on the BIJ aggressive, but in the heavy milling with free H exchanges, he appears to have received a little the H1 worse of the argument. The local boy has much B to learn, but he has the essential qualities of K gameness and a powerful wallop, and when experi-B experi-B enc o teaches him the value of a straight punch and Bjj better judgment of distance, he will be a strong Bj antagonist for about anyone in his class. B! & J5 B Jim Jeffords was a great disappointment in his iH recent fight, as something fairly spectacular was Bj expected of him after the rough assortment of mill- B! ing ho administered to Ruhlin a few weelcs ago. B Jeffords is now a strong candidate for a ride with B that venerable crew of dead ones of which Ruhlin B and Sharkey are the most conspicuous. And, by B the way, now is the propitious time for some en- B terprising. sport promoter to secure Gardner's ser- B vices in a local punch distributing contest with B Kid McCoy, who said he was quite willing to meet B the winner of the recent fight here if proper in- B ducements were offered. K cj ti Bj i Jimmie Gardner is considered more or less of a Bf horo for having the temerity to face Joe Gans, H the hitherto invincible, in the canvased arena K Gardner has shown by his late performances that H he is undoubtedly the man among all the white H lightweights to contest Gans supremacy. All the H other strong candidates for high honors in that H division have been easy prey for him. He will H now undoubtedly face one of the greatest masters H of the science fistic, and his friends are justified H in believing that he 'has a good chance of talcing H the colored man's long standing laurels from him. H If Gardner is-unabie to do the trick, it seems prob- H able that Gans will retire without ever having K met an equal in his class. Even Battling Nelson, B who does not appear to fear anything from a Ben- H gal tiger to a circular saw, refuses to mix with the B colored champion. Altogether the task Gardner H is undertaking is the toughest one of his promts- B ing career. B JC & B Aurelio Hererra has been accused of side B stepping in the arrangements for his coming bout B with Nelson. The Mexican has a very good flnan- B cial judgment, and he would much rather have B ai ranged for a bout with some one of the Eddie B Hanlon class, where he would have had a much B better chance of winning honors and money than B ' with the hard punchy j Dane. Herrera never was B without a small assortment of the yellow stripe, B besides which he- has a very well developed idea B of the commercial value of himself and his re- B markable punch. BB ' ' & & B The impression prevails among many sport- B ing authorities that the question of supremacy be- BB tween Young Corbett and Britt will never be set- Bi if tied by a second ring battle, for the reason that B James Edward appears to intend never to enter H the ring again Besides not desiring to hazard the B possible loss of his questionable championship, the Hk California pride has a maimed forearm which will B't , probabiy never be of effective service to him in B the futre The Elders celebrated their home-coming by being presented with a shut out, but for all that the fans were glad to welcome them back to the local loam. While the team has not made any very noticeable bid for the first place in the league, they have generally given exhibitions with which no fault can be found and have shown considerably consider-ably more effectiveness under the new management. manage-ment. One more week of baseball in September fs all the schedule provides for the Salt Lake fans. Although we have held firmly to the rear van of the league, the season thus far has been in the main a very satisfactory one. & j: The tennis tournament for the state championship champion-ship in singles and doubles with an entry of sixty-four, sixty-four, is the all-absorbing amateur sporting event just at present. The interest is keen, and the courts all over the city are being used daily in preparation for the event. Aside from the handsome Schramm cup offered for the championship in singles, there are many other handsome prizes, and the finals in the tournament tour-nament will be worth going miles to see. It is a difficult matter to pick a winner with so many enthusiasts in the form they are playing in, but it is practically certain that the Salisbury an'l IBHBkPsSSP" W5?!T 'BBB BbBBmBht y IWBfife B BbBIBBIBBBBBB BNBP '!BB 1 HE SCHRAMM CUP From J. Captain Morrow and Lieutenant Haskell, Dr. Plummer and W. H. Broddus. e & Little Frankie Nlel, the bantam weight champion, cham-pion, who recently blurred Hughey McGovern'a championship aspirations, recently made the rather rath-er startling annpunoemnet that he would fight Britt provided the featherweight champion would make 130 pounds ringside. That sounds like childish bravado on the face of it, but anyone who has ever seon the heavy Hitting little whirlwind whirl-wind in action would not be at ail surprised if he vanquished Britt if they met at anything near equal weights. The match between James J. Corbett and Philadelphia Phil-adelphia Jack O'Brien should furnish some of the most scientific glove dalliance ever witnessed in an arena. Both of them are as shifty as the primordial pri-mordial flea, and although neither of them is likely like-ly to hit the other hard enough to break the ice on a salt sea wavelet, the bout will be vastly interesting inter-esting to lovers of expert fisticuffs. Ruby Red Robert Fitzsimmons, who demonstrated his superiority super-iority over O'Brien in the short Philadelphia encounter, en-counter, will be very much delighted to meet the winner, if winner there be, in a six round frollck. |
