Sixth graders study volcano activity Tte sixth graders at Grovecrest wntary School recently lived the eruptions of 64 i Srildren in the classes of Mr. 9 d Mrs. Allen and Mr. Wathen j Jmade, individually or in groups , m or threes, miniature Volcanoes using plywood and chicken-wire as a base. Papier-mache had then been used to mold mountain-shapes in great variety. Paint added color and realism to this hands-on science project. The classes met in a darkened classroom one afternoon to mix ammonium dichromate and alcohol together in the crater tip of each mountain. Then the mixture was set on fire with a match to cause a chemical reaction which did indeed imitate the fiery explosions of a volcano, complete with ashes. This was a fun learning activity which these sixth graders will long remember. |
