October 1. 1986 - Page 9 Annual alumni game promises great performance With the rosters now finalized and only 10 days until the 1986 alumni game, practice and training schedules for the two teams are "in full swing". ..meaning getting together every other night or so to rehearse some plays and firm up some bodies, that in some cases aren't quite as hard as they were in high school. But, even though some of the bodies are soft, there will be some real football played on Oct. 11, and you can "take that to the bank!" After Monday's draft, the two teams will literally match up man for man. The White team, which is basically the State Finalist team of 1982 (minus Scott Walker, Jason Allred and Leo Biggs; plus Mitch McCuistion, Chad Henry and Gary Moosman; will take on an all-st- team of players from 1977 to 1981. This team, who will wear blue, Clark Hill, Darren Frampton and Curt Harrison are shown in 1982 quarterfinal game against Dixie. This trio and many others will play in Alumni Game Oct. 11 in Viking Stadium. Proceeds go to the P.G. football program. features some of the more "hard-nosed- " players ever to play at PGHS. Do the names Mark Atwood, Cliff Wood, Mike Fryer, Jeff Strasburg, and Harry Julkunen ring any bells? You can bet they rang plenty of opponents "bells" while wearing Viking blue! The White team, who will field a good defense of its own, will have to out "finesse" the tough Blue squad to stay in the game. Playing for the Whites will be 1982 Curt Harrison (fullback), Craig Hilton (receiver), and Clark Hill (quarterback). Gary Moosman, Darrin Frampton and Mickay Robinson will also be key people to watch. Center Brent McAllister, guards Daryn Smith and Chris Kitchen and tackles Stony Brooks and Riley Frazier will make up a solid offensive line, while Rod Maxfield, Kelley Sanderson, Phil Cook, Mitch McCuistion, Chad Henry and Mark Harvey will make the White defense strong. The annual fundraiser for Pleasant Grove High School football could end up being one of the best football games played in PG this year. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Oct. 11 in Viking Stadium. If .' ! She will receive a certificate for a steak dinner from Golden Corral of American Fork. Sophs drop one to Bulldogs, 20-- 9 Provo scored 20 second half points to beat the PG sophs 20-- 9 Thursday. On the third Viking play of the game, Darrin Henry took a pitch from Russ VanDyke and passed 45 yards to Lynn Green for the game's first score. Mike Hanks made it 0 with a down the middle kick. Later, an errant snap on a Provo punt sailed over the Bulldog punt-er's head and the covering official erroneously blew the ball dead in , the end zone, just as the Vikes were about to recover. The safety made it ' Mathalftime. Provo scored early in the third period when PG fumbled the first snap of the second half and the ' Bulldogs recovered and later scored. Alter forcing PG to punt, Provo drove to the 25 yard line where Darren Brown, PG's strong safety, intercepted and ran 75 yards for an apparent PG score. The play was called back on a defensive holding call. "Somehow the official got the call backwards," said soph coach Jack Hill. "He (the official) called J holding on our defensive end (Justin Atwood) who was rushing the passer," Hill added. Another 15 yard penalty for un-sportsmanlike conduct gave Provo a first down on the Vikes' 12 and the Bulldogs took the lead 14-- 9 three plays later. "We lost our composure with the bad call and didn't recover in time to stop Provo," said Hill. "I hope we matured as a team and learned to accept an official's mistake audi got on with the gama," Hill added. ' ? For the sophs, it was the first loss in the last 13 games and Hill, who is a Western Athletic Conference football official on Saturdays, was quick too add, "We made too many mistakes, fumbles, etc. to blame the officials when we lose." "If you blame the officials when you lose, you have to give them credit when you win, and I'll bet Provo didn't give the officials credit for the win and neither would I," said the smiling coach. PG travels to Timpview Thursday for a 4 p.m. game with the soph Thunderbirds. Local golfer receives medal in Region Eight tournament Brandon Martin was the medalist last week in a Region 8 golf tour-nament held at East Bay Course in Provo. Martin, a junior at PGHS, shot an 83 to lead the field. Coach Bruce Bushnell says the "team is really improved this year and most of the players are un-derclassmen." 1 Waterfowl season begins Sat. The 1986 waterfowl season begins Saturday, Oct.. 4. Goose season opener follows on Oct. 11. The noontime duck opener should ijtlract about 30,000 waterfowl toilers to Utah fields and marshes. Waterfowl hunting interest has Pered off this year, due in part to flooding conditions around the Great Sale Lake. Several favorite alerfowl hunting areas remain 'Wed by up to 15 feet of salt water. . Duck hunters who spend a little . me loking for new hunting areas ?. exPerimenting with new hun-lln- 8 techniques should find good success. Breeding populations and - naD'tat conditions in Canada have . proved since last year. A fall . "Sht greater than last year is eipected. The real bright spot in Utah ateowl hunting is the Canada goose. Resident goose populations have increased in recent years, and northern breeding areas have produced more young birds. The fall flight should be similar to or higher than last year. Before going hunting, waterfowl hunters need to read the waterfowl proclamation, available at division offices and most license agents around the state. The daily bag limit is five ducks: only four can be mallards, with one hen; only four can be pintails, with one hen; two redheads andor canvasbacks in the aggregate. The Canada goose limit remains at two, one in some areas. Utah waterfowl hunters must have both a state and federal duck stamp in their possession while hunting, steel shot zones in Box Elder, Weber and "Utah counties will be enforced. |
