Show Citizen. Press Review - Wed., Oct. 1, 1986 - Page 16 'A Tender Touch' touches romantics By MARCELLA W ALKER If you are a romantic you will love "A Tender Touch," now playing at the Valley Center Playhouse in Lindon every Friday, Saturday and Monday through Oct. 13 at 8 p.m. This is a musical adaptation of the play "Marty." It is the story of a man who has reached the age of 35 years without getting married. He is shy with a poor self-imag- He thinks himself fat and ugly. He believes no girl would ever want him. Dennis Murphy plays the role of Marty with tenderness and com-passion. You can't help but love Marty and your heart goes out to him. Once, when he was turned down for a date, a lady in the audience actually said, "Oh-h-h,- " out loud. Clara Davis, played by Susan Hentz, is a would-b- e spinster, who hasn't quite given up hope on finding the right man, although her brother has given up hope for her. Susan uses the right mannerisms to convince the audience that this woman does see herself in a bad light, is convinced of her plainness, and has little con-fidence in herself as a woman. Clara is a bit round shouldered, touches her glasses often which draws attention to them, and jams her hands into her pockets as if to keep them hidden so that they cannot give away any of her emotions. Even after these two meet, there are problems. The involvement of Elizabeth Lambert as Marty's mother adds spice as she attempts to help her shy son through a difficult time. The supporting players are colorful and the scenes at the dance hall are enjoyable. The part of Reno Canduso is played by young David Barry, who plays his role with in-tensity. Dave Roquemore, who is also the director, is Angie Figone, the friend of Marty. He adds a good deal of humor to the play as well as playing an interesting contrast to Marty. This story is very romantic, and looks at things from a man's per-spective rather than the woman's, which we see so often. Other cast members are Grant Draper, Dave Root, Tasha Hahn, Sally Doegey, Marie Miller, Loree Nielsen, Shane Barker, Julia Lambert, Kris Merkel, Tawni Bristol, Gini Pence, Jimmy Grogan, Lynn Pyne and Lance Hancock. Choreography is by Jan Webb. Keith Renstrom is the producer. The musical adaption of this story is by James Lambert, a local writer. He was the assistant director for the show and handled lights and sound. The Valley Center Playhouse is located at 780 N. 200 East, Lindon. Tickets are available at the door.
