Show 20 BOX ELDER JOURNAL, Brigham City, Utah Thursday, June 13, 1974 Gardening seminar Corinne city council set here Thursday appoints new judge by Brenda B. Anderson The Corinne City Council met in regular session recently with a number of items up for discussion. The appointment of a new city judge and city building inspector were on the agenda. Mrs. Jacqueline Lichfield has been sworn in to the position of city judge filling a vacancy left by the resignation of Juanita Bisek recently. Curtis Hansen has taken over the duties of city building inspector. Calvin Smith, a former councilman, held this position until a transfer in his employment made it necessary for him to resign. Anyone living in the limits, wishing to build or demolish, is asked to contact Hansen in regards to a building permit. Corinne City has received a $2700 allocation from the Utah State Road Department with which they hope to chip the oiled roads in town if material becomes available. Patching of oiled roads will also be done. A new city councilman will be immediately to appointed replace Eugene Shinkle who has moved to Wyoming. Mr. Jim of Utah State Reynolds University Water Research Laboratory met with the council with a request for permission to do research work on the sewage plant. He has selected Corinne for the 12 month study because it is meeting the Environmental Protection Agency standards set up by the government. Council granted approval to the request. Anyone wishing to reserve the city park for summer activities is asked to make a reservation ahead of time by calling Mrs. Ivy Wankier at the city hall. Thirteen members of the DUP Fruitvale Camp spent a full day, from 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., in Salt Lake City Wednesday, June 5th. In the morning they took the Utah Historical Society tour. They saw Ottinger Hall, which is in Memory Grove. Historically this museum was the social hall for the volunteer firemen, where they rested and had recreation activities. Now it is filled with relics from the past. Their guided bus tour stopped at the Dern Mansion, and the McCluneMao&ion. --The. Mc. Qune JjibsjJaa was formerly the McClqne School of Music. It cost well over half a million dollars to build. They then e traveled through the district, which has many interesting old homes. The group had their lunch at Arrow Press Square and then they spent the afternoon at Trolly Square. The North Box Elder DUP June Jubilee will be Saturday, June 15th, at 1 p.m. at the Mar-melad- Honeyville Ward Cultural Hall. This will involve both the Fruitvale and Corinne Camps. There will be a planned pot luck meal and an interesting program. Rides will be furnished. Call Capt. Elma Carter if interested. Nogalas, Hermosillo, Guadalajara and that her mother, Suzy, and sister, jane, like shopping the best. Another tour will be on it's way Thursday, June 13th. It will include others from Corinne. of School Orem The Acrobatics was involved in the Second Annual Acrobatics and ComDemonstration petition held Friday, June 7, at Bear River High School. Several from Corinne and West Corinne placed high in this competition in their various divisions. Those who placed in the beginning acrobatic groups are as follows: Five year olds and under: Karry Jo Yagi received second place trophy, and Jill Carter third place trophy. Seven and eight year Kimberlee olds: Hardy received fifth place ribbon. Ten year olds: Dana Hardy received First place trophy, Wendy Sato second place trophy, and Shauna Roche fourth place ribbon. 11 and 12 year old girls: Trudy Nelson received fifth place ribbon. Girls 13 years and older: Stiphanie Anderson received first place trophy. Thdsewho placed in .the intermediate competitions are as follows: Eight and 10 year olds on the beam: Lisa Yagi received first place trophy and Tracy Craner received second place trophy. 13 years and older on the novice: Cindy Craner received third place trophy. Saturday, June 15, Lisa Yagi and Tracy Craner will both compete at the state competition in Salt Lake City. is Electrical Engineering. He has been living off campus. Marsha is majoring in languages, specifically Spanish and French. She would like to do translations and interpreting. Marsha will most likely work towards receiving a teachers certificate as well. She has been fulfilling general requirements along with her language major requirements. Some of her classes include, communications, Dr. Horsley achieves at university William W. Horsley received his degree in medicine June 8 from the University of Utah. Horsley, formerly of Brigham City will spend the next year interning at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Md. Horsley presently lives at 1038V4 South Twelfth East, Salt Lake City. He is the son of Mrs. Scott P. (Doril W.) Horsley and the late Mr. C. LeGrande Horsley. Mrs. Horsley resides at 28 North second East, Brigham City. Horsley is a graudate of Box Elder high class of 65. He received his Bachelors degree in Medical Biology from the U of U in 1971. He graduates from the university with a Doctors of medicine with the honors status of Magna Cum Laude. While attending the university he was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, an honor fraternity. Local home gardeners will have their chance share their problems and successes, and to ask questions of gardening experts at a seminar slated on Thursday, June 13, at 8 p.m. in the Box Elder Junior High school choral room. Sponsored by the Spade and Hope Garden club, the seminar is a follow-u- p of an earlier program assisting gardeners to plan and select proper seeds for their home gardens. This session will include insect and weed control, irrigation, other common problems of gardeners, and then the questions and answers that concern specific problems of local garto Mat-satla- Mexico Guadalajara, City, and Alcapulco. While in Guadalajara for four days they lived with Mexican families and attended an institute of study. They had classes in Mexican singing and culture, and Spanish communication. They spent three days in Mexico City touring in and areas near by the city, such as the pyramids. They spent two days and a night in Alcapulco. Julie said that this was her favorite part of the trip. Sue said she liked staying in the Mexican homes in major ...medical degree gardener. Mexico tour Julie Bunderson, Suzy, Jane and Sue Ferry all travled south of the border to Mexico with the Box Elder junior and high school tour. They left by bus May 24 and returned by chartered jet June 5th. They visited Home for Summer Andy and Marsha Pommier are home for the summer from USU. Andy has been taking classes in drafting, computer science, math and english. His William W. Horsley Weeds and bugs and water may not sound exciting to some people, but they are always topics of concern and conversation to a home history, general music, literature, and english. Marsha has lived in the High Rise where she has a room to herself. She participated in the dorm activities and has been home for holidays. At present she is a teachers assistant in the migrant program in Corinne. Janiel Yamasaki has been attending USU as a speech pathology major. She has also been working on a psychology minor. In her classes she has delt with communication disorders; voice disorders and language remediation and This coming fall will begin study towards her masters degree in the same field. She will receive funding disorders. Janiel by the department of speech pathology for her continued education. This is similar to receiving a scholarship. Janiel lives in the Chi Omega Sorority House. She has been active in the sorority for the past three years. She has served as panalinic rush chairman; chairman over rush into all of the different greek sororities. She is also a little sister of Manerva which is for the SAE. We have two Corinnites who graduated from college this year. Dick Jensen from USU and Don Walker from Weber State. Dick Jensen finished his requirements with the completion of winter quarter. His major was Civil Engineering. He commuted every year. Karen, his wife, has worked at Thiocol for the past five years to help him through school and thereby has earned her PHT degree (Put Hubby Through). Dick began work with the Peter Kiewit and Sons Construction Company as their Civil Engineer the first of April. At the present they are working on deners. There will also be discussion of crops which can still be planted and harvested this season. Robert Northness, a third year debate student, received that notification recently from Professor Jay Busse, who will the respected clinic. The amount of the scholarship s of tuition will cover costs to a two week session beginning June 16. Professor George Schell, the director of forensics at Loyola, the workshop. will Northness will be enrolled in the advanced division of debate and will benefit from group lec- Box two-third- the interchange in Weber Canyon. Don Walker graduated in the field of Elementary Education. Before attending Weber Don attended Steven Heneger and served a mission for the LDS church. Dons wife, Ada, also earned her PHT. Reporter Sarah Wood that the Five Silly group met at the home of their leader Karla Smoot, Monday, June 11, from 10 to 12 p.m. Opening prayer was given by Shela Smoot, pledge by Peggy Thomas, and closing prayer by Sarah Wood. They made nog and sandwishes, egg salad sandwiches, and broiled sandwiches. Next week they will be going to the store to study food and prices. reported Sifters Wrestling Meet boys from Corinne participated in a wrestling meet in Brigham this last week. They were as follows: Jim Smoot, Brad Hatch, Jeff Hardy, Tim Woodward, Craig Smoot, Dave Juassi, Greg Norman, Mat Smoot, Mike Smoot, Keith Sayama, Jeff Nelson, Denton Hatch, Mike Jeppesen, Karry Norman, Gary Norman, Pete Gonzalas, Bruce Hubbard, Mike Woodward, Jim Smoot, Brad Hatch, and Jeff Hardy finishing in first place. At an honor assembly, Boyd was presented with an electric typewriter and plaque for serving as chairman of the honor system program at the academy. Vice President Gerald R. Ford was the keynote speaker. Boyd now has a month vacation. He will spend sometime in Florida, will visit his brother and sister-in-laBruce and Mrs. Capt. Box Elder debate coach Allen Fleming was congratulatory. Northness, he noted, has maintained an outstanding record of high school forensics. Among honors received were undefeated records last year at the University of Utah, and Pocatellos Gate City invitational. He and his partner were second place in Oxford debate at the Golden Spike meet and placed first in the senior division of the Utah Bar Association tournament. At the National Forensics League meet, he was a participant in the first elimination round. This summers experience, Fleming explained, will lay a foundation for similar success in the coming year.
