All three children are attending the camp. Society Editor's sponsors child to Camp Hope session BPW Brigham City Business and Professional Womens Club is sponsoring again this year a child with cystic fibrosis to attend Camp Hope. Camp Hope is a camp for children who have cystic fibrosis, an inherited lung disease. Selected this year is Carol Packer, aidaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Packer. Her was brother, Raymond, sponsored by the BPW last year. Carol, Raymond, and their sister, Robyn, who has not contracted the disease, are all presently attending the camp, which opened last Sunday, continuing until June 15. Camp Hope is sponsored by the Crippled Childrens Services under the Bureau of Special Health Services, the Pediatric Department, University of Utah and the Reorganized LDS Church. This private camp is made possible by the Richard Hope family which supplies the secluded area outside of Orem. There are 21 youngsters there this year. The Bear River District Health department has coordinated to make this possible. Two-fol- d Purpose The purpose of the camp is two-fol- First d. it enables children with cystic fibrosis to have interaction with other children and to develop psychosocially. Second it gives d the parents of the cystic fibrosis child a break from the regimented health care pattern they must carry out daily in order for the child to live. At camp the children receive their medical treatments in the morning and at night, just as if home. were at they Paramedical personnel attend the camp along with the children to insure treatment is given. The rest of the day is spent enjoying crafts, hiking, over-burdene- riding horses, swimming and other activities. Cystic fibrosis is presently an incurable disease of infants and children, caused by inherited glandular defects. The glands involved are the mucous glands of the lungs and pancreas. Although the disease is congenital and hereditary, these children appear healthy at birth. However, within a few weeks, they develop symptoms of cystic fibrosis, presenting the typical picture of a thin, coughing child who is mentally bright but physically pathetic. Cystic fibrosis is believed to be transmitted to offspring by a recessive gene which both parents must carry. At present there is no way of preventing the condition. Cystic fibrosis may strike at some individual member of a family or skip an entire generation only to resume its course in a second generation. Treatment of children with cystic fibrosis includes the constant use of antibiotics, by mouth and by aerosol inhalation therapy, to help prevent and combat lung infections. SCRATCH PAD has Summer definitely arrived at the Editor household. It kinda crept up this year, for the school vacation began with just the two boys at home while their sister travelled with the school group in Mexico. Every mother can quickly certify that the noise factor with children does not add or even simply multiply as the number goes up, but there is a definite effect of squaring or cubing or some other complex mathematical formula. One child is mighty quiet at home and the addition of a second doesnt double the noise, but quadruples it. Add another child and a neighbor or two (or six) and the noise factor jumps staggeringly along with the grit factor. Grit factors have never really been studied by scientists, who seem to be more interested in the behavior of white mice and red ants and tsetse flies, but it could be the subject of research. An infection, such as the common cold, can be fatal for some cystic fibrosis children. Grit Factor Kitchens are the primary laboratory in the subject of grit factors. The first one enwith warmer countered weather is sand grit. Pant cuffs, traces left on table and counter in addition to the floor, it can be identified in its earlier stages before the padding of feet spreads it uniformly around the kitchen. Usually, the sugar grit gets a good chance to spread since punch stands are born in the minds of young boys primarily when their mother is at the grocery store, in the basement, or outside weeding and casually answers yes to an innocent or canister with query about making some punch. Even without punch stands, the sugar factor increases in the summertime with late cereal breakfasts and the penchant of early teen daughters for baking cookies each time the jar is empty (every other day). One advantage to sugar is that a puppy with a sweet tooth will zero in on the problem quickly, but it is coupled with a disadvantage that small applications of water just produce stickiness. A grain of salt Not as common a problem, but one that cannot be ignored, is the salt grit. It occurs primarily at the time that the and rhubarb pockets, canvas shoes, wet radishes socks, and the ears of young boys seem to be the primary catalyst in moving said sand from Point A (sandbox) and Point B (little league diamond) to Point K (kitchen), with the scientific study focusing there rather than going on to other points such as bathrooms, bedrooms, couch cushions, and the clothes hamper. Now that the boys are old enough to prefer showers, the study of silt patterns in the bottom of the bathtub will have to be left to the mothers of younger children to complete the study. Add Sugar The next variable is the sugar factor. It barely seems that the sand has been removed by broom, vacuum, mop and any other source of aid when a different kind of grit appears. Since this grit is usually localized around a sugar bowl are suitable for snacking, since most small boys are convinced that the suitable way to snack on either is to dip it into a fistfull of salt sprinkled liberally onto an open hand from the shaker. Salt can be differentiated from sugar in that the puppy doesnt take as many licks, but the cleanup is procedure usually very similar. Unless one really cares what the latest little pile of white grit is, a hurried cleanup can be accomplished without taking a taste test or chemical analysis. Besides, salt spots occur more often near the range where the most liberal salt shaker sits. Surely, that brief dissertation on the summer grit factor should spur the inquiry of an aspiring young scientist. The only problem is: the aspiring young scientist will probably be one of the family sons and well have to put up with the grit for research purposes!
