Tho full force of tho storm, the approach of which was heralded yesterday, struck this city at 1 o'clock Oils morning. Tho galo brought with It a delugo of rain. Most of the street lights were extinguished. At S o'clock this morning th storm still continued, but only minor dani-ngo dani-ngo was reiKjrted. The storml after swooping ovvt the I9I0 of Plnos yesterday, yes-terday, moved eastward and then shifted to the west, affecting chiefly Havana, Matanzas and Plnar del Rio provinces. It Is thought the tobacco crop will ijp destroyed by tho washing wash-ing out of tho seed beds. Tho Blem observatory reported 'before noon that the vortex of tho storm was passing over Havana. The velocity of the wind did not increase in-crease materially during tho day, but rain fell In torrents. Traffic at tho port ceased and business throughout the city was practicaiiy suspended. j The newspaper plants wero Inconvenienced Incon-venienced by tho cuttlnff off of tho electric power. El Mundo was the mly morning paper appearing today. It is reported that the storm devastated de-vastated tho town of Candida, ou tho south coast of tho Santa Clara province, pro-vince, and that many persons were killed there. It Is also reported that the Isle of Pines suffered severely when the gale doubled on Its track. News from the Interior is meager, as a consequence of the Interruption of telegraphic communication. |
