Teacher walkout justified goal was tangible but lacked desired effects by JD Conover staff writer Congratulations ladies and gentlemen Your state the wonderful land of Zion is currently ranked nationwide as the poorest place to receive an education We earned this honor because our teaching salaries verses the number of students taught is the lowest anywhere That's great if you're looking for bargains but in Connecticut for example teachers receive close to $3200 per student taught For each student taught in Utah a teacher gets about $700 Salaries aren't the only thing that need more than a kiss better Supplies used for educational purposes are also in dire need of help and for some silly reason people have a problem with a classroom that contains 3S desks and SO kids But have no fear for future Utah generations Recently an unknown trust of veritable geniuses discovered our tax dollars were no longer being spent for such productive things as pumping salt water to the middle of nowhere They thought that maybe the new found surplus of money could be spent on either making nasal hair indigenous to the housefly or a real long-shlike improving education Of course both ideas are being considered by the stale legislature Just to prove how badly they wanted the money teachers walked out However the flies are still planning their course of action and when it be comes a reality I hope it is at least one-haas stupid and pointless as the teachers walkout proved to be I'm sure the legislators trembled in their boots and lost countless hours of sleep at the thought of grown men and women acting for a day like the kids they teach Gee a whole day was wasted for NOTHING! Good job guys They didn't get a red cent or a second thought for all the stink they raised If the teachers really believed in what they were doing and wanted the money that bad why didn't they stay out until they got it? Instead they look it upon themselves to take the day off and give the kids one too That's real cute ot lf 1987-- as the American Revolution neared : Forces under Napolean Bonaparte began their retreat from Moscow The Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged points Ksworst-eve- r 0n Oct 16 1987 an abandoned 58 hours with no food or water well in Midland in : Finally the teachers ultimate goal wu to improve education How conducive to leaching and learning is a situation like that to the kids? It was a huge media event it broke the week into useless segments and pounded into the young people's heads how bad off they were On top of that students are required by Utah law to be in school 180 days a year Now nearly every school in the state has so find a day to make up the one they took off Great! Saturdays are susceptible to being a weekend where make-u- p day and so is the previously scheduled three-day Halloween it's a real nightmare 5Q8 decline one-da- y : Jessica McClure trapped 22 ft below Texas was rescued after surviving ' ' by Ragun Larkin staff writer It used to be a fun harmless holiday with little children running around dressed up in costumes knocking on doors and mumbling The houses would be decorated with cobwebs spiders ghosts goblins witches and black cats Large popcorn balls or candied apples were given to the children But now Halloween hu evolved into a nightmarel No more little innocent children with Now it's all a race to see just how much junkfood they can stuff into huge pillowcases or garbage bags! It isn't good enough to dress up Peter Pan or a princess they have to be a Transformer Batman Freddy Kruger or Jason No longer can the kids go out by themselves Some parents tell their kids that they cannot go after dark they must stay in the immediate neighborhood and absolutely never go by themselves However most parent's fears are justified There are so many cases of during Halloween Try describing what the missing child looks like "WeU he's a little boy with brown hair and blue eyes but you can't see his eyes or his hair because it wu covered by his mult He wu dressed Batman does that help?" Think about it How many little boys warn to be Batman for Halloween this year? It is sad what hu happened to this holiday Some people will not participate because the commercialism plays such a gigantic part in the scene A man that grows apples for a living gave them a treat to kids and they threw than on his lawn or in the gutter He wu so upset that they would throw his gift away just because it wasn't candy from the store that he won't participate in Halloween activities anymore Some people believe that Halloween is only for all the Devil Worshippers to hold their seances Others believe that it hu too big of connection with the evil forces and devils Whatever your beliefs and feelings are about Halloween it is still going to conte and soon Prepare yourselves for the nightmare is beginning again "trick-or-trea- t" jack-o-lante- jack-o-lante- u trick-or-treati- K- - Jake Shewmake kid-nippi- mm immmhmnmmICu's ten Christensen News Edi tor iM m Howard EditorMMMMMiMMMMMMMMMMMMiMGina Feature Eliason MMMMMMMMMMMMMICrisbc Entertainment EditorMMM HfCklUOfl IMMIHMIHMIlMMIMlimilMHMMaMtMIMIIIHIIMWWMaiilRlCMrU Sports Editor West Eagle Update WMMMMMMM m mm MMMMMMiMMMiMMCordy Hamaker Lonnie Behunin Stephanie Marea Photographers Stephanie Marvidikis Ragun Larkin Travis Mann Aimee Anderson Reporter Moser Jenny Blackburn Kristal Fivas Jeff Jordan Corey Dusty Neiman JJ) Conover Stephanie Bogdin £ Susan A Polster — m MMMM m mm m M Adviwfnr-THfEatttrn Cell tin Ulakandiiprinltd fi of Tht Eaglt it On official Undo publication cf in thitpub-ttudtn-tt ixprtsud Opinion winurandtprint fall paruri l¥try hr Thursday T mi — or ttaff Tht EotU offica it locoui m in Room 1 llcfOu Ham Btuldutg u u student loans through the payback quagmire "Overburdened by educational loans?" asks an ad in the Daily Californian A unique program at the U of Califomia-Berkcle- y "The Financial Aid Community Service Option" (FASCO) offers help The new program allows students to reduce their debts by performing community service work Students with Urge indebtedness need help Many face high loan payments soon after graduation just when they can least afford to pay them Now they can reduce the amount they owe their first year out of school All they have to do is volunteer or work at a job - in a community orgalow-payi- ng nization The more a student is paid the leu the reduction There's a maxi- mum $1000 reduction for each semester worked or $2000 annually The amount also depends on the number of hours the student e works work is allowed FASCCs unique approach offers multiple benefits says Vince DcAnda project director Because the students get credit for community service which reduces their debt they can afford to work in but worthwhile jobs FASCO may also help Iowa the number of graduates who default on their student loans Because of the program's obvious advantages it's populv The university however can fund only 100 students a year It uses four criteria in screening applicants These include the students' motivation and amount of indebtedness as well as the type of community project they want to do and its rate of pay Students must find their "We just create the motivation" says DcAnda But there's no lack of opportunities Students have counseled AIDS victims and worked with abused children ana tne homeless "A lot of jobs” he says "go begging" If finding jobs isn't a problem funding the program may soon be Right now FASCO receives money for administrative expenses from a two-yeFIPSE grant Full-tim- low-payi- ng means by which they chose to make their point left a bad taste in my mouth Let's hope that when this issue makes a return in January that it is handled better at its endnch Another snowballing problem turned out to be young children You can't exactly blame a young child who is usually picked up at school for getting lost on his way home If you are a parent that finds out your child didn't have school and he or she isn't home by dinner time who you gonna' call? Ghostbustcrs? I think not You are going to contact the local police and turn their attention from "serve and protect" to "locate and babysit" For the small children who were lucky enough to have parents in the know and were picked up or found their own way home what do you do with a child who should have been under the supervision of educators for the length of a school day? Finding last minute day care and running the Boston Marathon in bare feet have a lot in common It's next to impossible A working parent now has the option of leaving their child alone or taking time off from their job to compensate for the lack of planning on the part of teachers with unaware working parents who were sent home from school Their cause wu justifiable and their goal wu tangible The 1781 -- British Troops under Lord Cornwallis surrendered 1812-Fre- No one stopped to think that while the teachers were out moaning for money they cost others time and money College recruiters who mailed out thousands of first class announcements stating where and when they could be contacted by high school seniors lost out because no school meant no kids This threw a wrench in tentative touring schedules which in turn compounded and put staff members in a position where they would have to rework and plan everything over again you and the rest of the family planned to blow out of town and go visit the grandparents Today in History: York TownVa Berkeley helps own-projec- ts ar LETTERS TO THE EDITOR WELCOME Bring all submissions to Main 111 by Friday Oct 27 1989 |
