Show The Eagle Page 6 Thursday October 19 1919 r Gallery East presents "Utah Collects Utah" exhibition season at the College of Eastern Utah's Gallery East has opened with a collection of works created to highlight the development of art in Utah Entitled "Utah Collects Utah" the exhibit is from the Utah State Fine Art Collection and features strong examples of the rich history of art in the Beehive State According to CEU art instructor Jim Young the exhibition traces die development of various movements such as impressionism abstract impressionism and cubism It is also he said a tribute to the Utahns who as individual artists have enriched our lives and challenged our perceptions of ait The collection was created by the Utah legislature in 1899 as part of the "Fine Art Institute" which is known as the Utah Arts Council today The purpose of the legislation was and still is to promote and support the arts in Utah The creation of a collection of fine art was the first step in this process e Through the annual Utah the competition sponsored by has collection the Council Arts grown to over 1200 pieces Once consisting primarily of paintings The Mina (Anna McCourt) tlaapa as After a successful season last year the CEU Theatre Department is planning another one with the chiller "Dracula: A Tale of the Nosferatu" The play originally by George Luce and George Maguire will run from Oct 30 through Nov 1 with two performances on the 31 one at 7:30 and again at 10 pm The play is an adaption of the origional "Dark Count of Transylvania" by Bram Stoker The production will fall smack in the middle of the haunting sea son and holds promise to add a chill to your Halloween The play takes place in England around the turn of the 20th century In Dr Seward's sanatorium the beautiful Mina falls ill with a strange disease Dr Abraham Van Hclsing begins to suspect Count Dracula who has rcsently moved from Transylvania to the area in search of some fresh blood of some nocturnal mischief Dr Van Hclsing is not easily fooled by the Count's charm and poise since he has studied the legends of the undead and he knows their weaknesses The story ends in a final confrontation with Johnathan llarker Dr Van Helsing and the Count that will surely entertain witches and goblins of all ages Diane Henderson the director feels excited about the play "It's full of fun suspense and mystery But it's basicly a com- edy" The cast includes many new faces: Julie Taylor as Elizabeth Baderi Dan Hall Dr Seward Todd Dcvenish Johnathan Harker Ray Graham Renfidd Jim Dillon Dracula Jim Wilcock Professor Van Helsing and Anna McCourt Mina Tickets are S 350 adults $250 Students and $2 CEU students The house doors will open at 7 pm each night with curtain at 7 JO pm Costumes are also acceptable at the 10 pm performance on Halloween 1989-9- 0 state-wid- and sculptures with a few watercol-or- s the collection has added a large diversity of work including photog"Utah raphy crafts and prints Collects Utah" features approximately 30 works which parallel the trends in international art "This exhibit includes a wide variety of works that represent the period when they were created and the mediums that were popular at the lime" Young explained "For example the 1950s are represented by a portrait by Alvin Gittins that inspired an entire generation of painters but works from more recent years reflect new techniques and mediums" Through its subjects the works in the collection also create a unique historical perspective about the state The people and places of Utah are documented from each artist's individual point of view "Utah Collects Utah" is cosponsored by the Utah Arts Council and the College of Eastern Utah It will be exhibited at Gallery East in the Main "Messiah" practices Rehearsals for the Castle Valley Chorale's annual performance of Handel's "Messiah" will begin at 7 pm Thursday October 12 in the College of Eastern Utah Music Building and continue each Thursday evening until the production in er Jay Andrus the Chorale's rector said the "Messiah" is a died holiday tradition in eastern Utah which features local soloists and gives area vocalists an opportunity to learn and grow with one of the world's true masterpieces He encourages anyone interested to join the rehearsals "Newcomers are welcome to the Chorale and past performjoin
