season with new head coach Nick Colon taking over and with out further a do CEU is off to a very good start CEU vs Snow CEU opened up home play against Snow College Sept 29 With the thought in mind of an Eagle championship the ladies wen all fired up early in this game showing the Badgers that they were to be taken seriously In game one the Eagles before Snow knew what were up hit them Here the Badgers decided to call their first lime out to try and regroup to get back into the contest After the time out CEU had no thoughts in mind of letting down with strong serving from Tina Garcia and Rachel Skinner coming off the bench pushing the lead to 10-The Eagles were also supported with strong play off the bench from Pam Dupin who came up with a couple of strong spikes Cynthia Tadd proved to be an inspirational player for the Eagles showing she could get up high and bring down some powerful spikes Snow tried some liule rallies of their own bringing the score to 10-- 3 but they were to no avail Before long the Eagles put game number one behind them with a 15-- 5 not do them selves any favors by continuing to hit the ball long CEU went out front even further leading 14-- 5 with a chance to put the game away They were to be denied that from a very questionable call from the referee when Garcia made a diving play for CEU that would have ended the game but the call went the other way CEU eventually received the ball back on a side out at 14-- 8 The Eagles served the ball to Snow and the two teams rallied back and forth before Snow spiked the ball long for a 15-- 8 Lady Eagle victory and a straight set sweep of Snow CEU vs Dixie 6-- 0 0 victory court The Rebels scored first but lead The could only manage a lead didnt last long as the Eagles burst back with six unanswered pointswith the strong play of Dupin off the bench to go ahead 1 Dixie again seemed to get the momentum on their side as they struck right back to knot the score up at six But with the great team blocking of Skaggs and Derrick the Eagles tried to pull away once more going up 6 1- -0 6-- 9-- 5-- 0 7-- 0 7-- 4-- 11-- 12-1- victory 1 The two teams entered three knotted up one game a game The Eagles were determined piece that this lime they would be at the winning end of the score and appeared to be pumped up for anything the Rebels could throw at them Pabst began the game with a very strong cross court spike that put the Eagles up top early and they never looked back Dupin followed that up with a powerful spike of her own down the line to put CEU up 0 2-- They increased their lead Dixie took off The Rebels came up with four unanswered points and led 1 when CEU called a timeout to gain their composure They came back an fired up to tie the seme at four all Dixie tried one lut CEU's new women's volleyball heed cosch display's the determination and concentration that will make them winners Photo by Stephanie Marvldikls Nick Colon brings his winning ways to CEU by Richard Hlckmon sports editor The College of Eastern is Utah looking forward to a great and exciting volleyball program this year and in order to fill this request they went abroad and hired Nicolas Colon from Inglewood Cal Colon came to Price with great hopes of building a strong contender for the conference championship He feels excited about the new volleyball season and thinks the ladies have a lot of poten- - l1' In 1967 he came to New York an exchange student from Puerto Rico and wu later transfered to California to finish his schooling He finished his degree at California State University In 1984 many exciting he became part things happened of Puerto Rico's Olympic track team He feels that with his involvement with the Olympic Games he hu gained some skills that he will be able to use to motivate his players and have a championship team Before coming to CEU Colon wu teaching at Inglewood High School He also coached the volleyball team taking them all the way to the city finals Besides school activities he wu involved with a track club called The Athletic Conference He is trying to help kids get the same chance that he once had and that is to participate in the Olympics u u crowd wu equally excited Pabst and Skaggs helped CEU gain their big lead with powerful spiking and plenty of hustle CEU also seems to have a lot of team togethemus something that they have been lacking in tire put Dixie eventually pulled together and managed to g t within Colon says he would like to keep his recruiting u in-sta- te u much possible year hu proved to be a very wise choice since the Lady Esgles are off to one of their best starts with their new coach at the helm TTiis One of his top priorities on his team is academics He wants all his ladies to get their education above all else He also stresses working hard and being competitive Colon is a big believer in community support and he plans to do all he can to get the community involved including clinics such recreational leagues He would also like to see CEU take pride in their sports including women's sports by getting involved with their teams and to get the teams excited It's amazing what a loud and enthusiutic crowd can do for a home team he u aAtwH He is not afraid to go after good players he uys and is not going to sit back in his first year and call it a rebuilding program He is going to insist that his team works together and works hard and believes he can bring a conference champi onship to CEU He says the team hu a lot of advantages with a great facility like the BDAC and he plans on using them three points (8-of CEU when coach Colon decided to call a time out After the time out the fugles still seemed to have trouble getting their game going again the Rebels kept scoring bringing it within one at 7 The Eagles needed to get (continued on page 11) 5) u 8-- |
