Show Huddle Muddle Editor : ,; It seems to me that if Mr. Name Withheld's com-,' com-,' ments on the Huddle are to be criticized, one should ,.' stick to the issues and inquire a bit before flailing j Huddle, I have taken the time to inquire cf those who should know, and it appears that Mr. WH isn't as misinformed as Roberts might think. On checking with the SLC Police, I learned that it is a fact that tempted rebuttal. Huddle Heretics To begin with, it appears that Roberts is perhaps less informed and less analytical than Mr. WH. Mr. WH did not say the Huddle was a sanctuary for "winos, etc.", but merely stated "the reasons . i away especially in the case of Bruce Roberts' at-should at-should prove inviting to other minority groups who need a place to loiter: winos, etc," Mr. WH did not generalize and state that all those who frequent the Huddle are derelicts or non-conformists; he stated the obvious that "many appear to be creatures from a circus side show." Who can deny that? (I know of many students who take nesw comers to the University to the Huddle to introduce them to our prime attraction.) attrac-tion.) And speaking of being brazen, who are you Mr. Roberts to so brazenly label another a "paranoid, frustrated homesexual?" Mr. WH referred to many of the habitues of the Huddle simply as "hippies;" you condemn him for that and in turn exhibit your journalistic journal-istic talent by the worst kind of name calling! I hope this isn't your standard response when you cannot otherwise refute an argument. No Authority As to the question of police having authority in the Huddle there is jurisdictional separation between the city proper and the University, just as there are separate jurisdictions for the county, state highway i.atiol and other cities sharing contiguous boundaries with Salt Lake City. Police Own The Salt Lake City poiice do not come on campus unless invited by the University. And, although one might witness a campus policeman eating lunch in the Huddle, I was told that they tlo not patrol the Huddle; further, before taking any kind of action in the Union, they must clear the way by getting permission from Union officials and the director of Security. It is the contention of Union officials that they are fully capable of policing their own bldg. without outside help unless, perhaps, there was an all out emergency of some sort. Also, if Salt Lake City narcotics agents do station themselves in the Huddle (as alleged) they do it without the knowledge cr sanction of the university and cannot move in on their prey until off campus. Mr. Grundfossen, assistant dean of students, admits that the University officials "refuse to give police carte blanche to clean up" the Huddle even though "the administration knows drugs are being passed" there. Did you read the reasons he gave? He is certain innocent persons would be effected, and "we can't refuse someone the right to get something to eat." Now you decide for yourselves if we haven't sanctuary on the campus . . . No Mass Arrests Those of you who challenge the allegations presented pre-sented by Mr. WH don't talk about the food, the right to eat, the juke box. We all realize the food is good, that people have to eat. It should be obvious to the discriminating reader that Mr. WH isn't calling for mass arrests for card playing; the question is: why should the University provide a place for people to act with impunity as they cannot elsewhere?
