Show Escalante News By Marlene Haws 801-826-4859 By the time you read this, the Pioneer Day celebtration will be over. But at this writing, everyone every-one is just getting into gear to celebrate. While some visitors are already arriving in town for family reunions, others are moving mov-ing to the hills. Bill and Clorene Vidrine have had grandchildren here for the better part of the month. Nathan Vidrine, Fountain Green and Andy Vidrine, Riverton, were here for two weeks and, after they mowed, weeded and cleaned yards, their grandparents took them to St. George to visit Annette An-nette Knudsen and Dick and Don-ette Don-ette Lee and the cousins. After the boys went home, son Greg Vidrine' s two daughters, Jenifer and Esther brought their friend, Carly Johnson, all of Fountain Green, for a two week visit. They painted and helped grandma clean house while they were here. Ross and Nadine Shelley packed up all their belongs and went to Delta to live. The Shelleys have lived here for the past 10 years and have a lot of friends who will miss them. Rick Haws, TolleSon, Ariz., and two sons, Kory and Robby, came to visit and spend some time camping on the mountain with the Klyn Haws and Dee Haws families. Jon and Jillyn Sorensen, Salina, were here also. Jerald Thompson, Provo, was was on his way to St. George, but said when he got to the turn-off coming to Escalante, he just couldn't resist coming over for a little while. He missed his parents, par-ents, Ken and Marie Griffin, but visited with other relatives and friends. Elwood and Vonda Willis, Glenwood, brought Nelda Willis home to spend the day with Blaine. Friends who visited her siad she was looking good and they were happy to see her. Donita Griffin got out of the hospital just in time to go to Salt Lake for a doctors appointment, then after she got back home, Clem had to take her back to the hospital in Panguitch again. The Ernest and Mary Griffin family got together at Posey Lake for their annual campout. While there, Al Heaps, known to most of us as Lon, slipped and fell. He was transported with a head wound to the hospital by EMT's. Wayne and Pat Banks brought a group of friends from Washington Washing-ton City to enjoy a Hole-In-The-Rock experience. They stayed overnight in the cabins at Escalante Esca-lante Outfitters, which made the trip seem a little more authentic. Then they visited Posey Lake, Blue Spruce, Anasazi State Park, Calf Creek, and ended with dinner din-ner at the Circle D Restaurant. They also watched the film on Hole-In-The-Rock. There were 16 in the group. Besides Wayne and Pat, those who attended were Owen and Jerri Barker, Don and Betty Evans, Harold and Vonna Vawdrey, Roy and Connie Sherwood, Sher-wood, and Paul and Marge Hul- linger, all of Washington; Eldon and Joyce Ericson, Los Angeles, Calif.; and George and Muriel Atwood, St. George. All were very thrilled with their "pioneer experience." Max Porter went to Orange-ville Orange-ville to visit his son Max and family. He also brought home some apricots. They must be living liv-ing better in Orangeville than we are here. We didn't have many apricots this year! Brett, Randy and Heather Mecham, Las Vegas, Nev., visited vis-ited at the home of their grandparents, grand-parents, Starns and Fon Mecham, for a few days. They enjoyed fishing at all their favorite fishing holes, seeing their cousins and riding four wheelers. Theron Mitchell had surgery in Cedar City. It was kind of an in-and-out type thing so he is back home and feeling better. His neighbor, Fon Mecham, also spent one night at the hospital in Panguitch. Machelle Johnson, Cedar City, has been here helping grandma and grandpa, Alberta and Neal Liston, get ready for the twenty fourth of July. Neal fell and hurt his back, but is still able to tend his garden. Alberta says she just "looks on" now! Tracy Simpson went to the LDS temple in St. George. He was accompanied by his parents Rob and Dorothy Simpson, Sandra San-dra Porter, Que Porter, Max Porter, Por-ter, Dan and Lois Spencer and his bishop, Clem Griffin. He is anxiously anx-iously awaiting the arrival of Aug. 20 when he will be entering the Missionary Training Center in Provo in preparation for his LDS mission to the Ukraine in Russia. The Escalante Chamber of Commerce had dinner at the Senior Sen-ior Citizen center on Wednesday night and their monthly meeting following dinner. They encourage anyone who has questions or comments to attend their meetings, meet-ings, which are the third Wednesday Wednes-day of the month, 6:30 p.m.. at the Community Center. Anne Spencer reports that Ushur Spencer is out of the hospital hospi-tal and at the home of daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Garl Cot-tam Cot-tam in Provo. He is doing much better and just waiting for the doctor to tell him he can come home. Alvin and Marie Twitchell, Georgetown, Tex., their daughter and son-in-law, Trisha and Gary Goad, Grouver, Tex. visited at the home of Alvin's sister, Nelda Munson. The Goads stayed overnight, over-night, but the Twitchell's stayed three nights. Nelda was wishing they had stayed longer as they were "good helpers." Alvin had surgery after they got back home and is doing fine. Word was received of the death of Evan Roundy, 80, Salt Lake City. Evan was a son of Hyrum and Jane Lay Roundy. Ron and Tina Fuller visited at the home of Garneal Smith. They (See Escalante News On Page 5-A) Escalante News From Page 2-A recently moved to New Mexico from Alaska, so they are glad to be a little closer to home now. Leah Griffin had signed up to go to Nauvoo, 111., for the Joseph Smith, Sr., reunion, but had to cancel out and go, instead, to be with her daughter Marilee Miller, Mesa, Ariz., who is bedfast while she awaits the arrival of her new baby. Maitland Spenser has been quite ill and is in the hospital in St. George. The family of Jackie and Angela An-gela Woolsey have been gathered at Posey Lake for a family reunion. reun-ion. Around 150 of them in the group came to enjoy the fun that included Leo and Corrine Gravis, and Vasho and Frema Gravis, Hooper; Dwayne and Jackie Jones, Roy; James and Cloma Haskins, Salina; Edgar and Carrie Taylor, St. George; Dennis and Karen Woolsey, Littlefield, Ariz., and John R. Blake says it gets kind of tough sometimes when there are 20 kids and only one bathroom! bath-room! Margean Schow and Twila Michelangelo are back from their trip to Alaska. Jerry and Sherree Roundy got their big bus-load of 54 people back from their LDS church history his-tory tour just in time for the Pioneer Pio-neer Day celebration. Those we know who went with them were Calvin and Martha Schow, Connie Con-nie Jepsen and his daughter Shawna Faye and Sheree's daughter Michelle Alvey. They went as far as Niagara Falls, Canada and all other points in between. |
