Show Maturity of Hogs. From a market standpoint a mature hog Is one that has either temporarily or permanently ceased growing, and taken on the form and finish required by the meat trade. The time at which a pig comes to maturity may be determined de-termined very largely by the character char-acter of the feed and the manner of feeding. Pigs have been brought to maturity at will anywhere between the ages of six and nine months. Early maturity is brought about by feeding an excess of non-nitrogenous feeds, or by sudden changes from nitrogenous to non-nitrogenous feeds. By feeding an excess of such a fat-forming fat-forming veed as cornmeal, the pigs do not have a sufficient amount of protein pro-tein nutriments to continue their growth, and so begin to lay on fat. |
