Show AND AM U 0 E ME N T8 GU ID E MONDAY, MAY Texas Rangers Will Ride Again A profile of America's oldest agency, the Texas Rangers, will be presented on "Chronolog" Friday at 6:30 p.m. on Channel 2. The report by correspondent Tom Pettit will detail the activities of the modern-da- y Rangers. With the cooperation of the Texas g "Chronolog" Department of Public Safety, the camera team of Richard Smith and Roger Andrews filmed the Ranger force in action. Long a staple of Hollywood Westerns, the real Rangers were organized in 1923 as a private army to make Texas safe for colonizing. "Over the years," Mr. Pettit says, "they have had a in the reputation as being tough and controversial, often knee-deeintricacies of Texas politics." Today the Ranger force is an elite group of 82 men who work as criminal investigators, often assigned to assist local law enforcement agencies in rural areas of the state. But they retain their identification with the Rangers of frontier days. Mr. Pettit men dex.iici ihsa as "a close-kn- it group of backward-lookin- g who glorify their own history." Featured in the "Chronolog" report is one of the most controversial Rangers of modern times, Capt. A. Y. Allee, who retired in 1970 after more than three decades as a Texas Ranger. "In his heyday," Mr. Pettit says, "Captain Allee was the toughest law enforcement officer within 100 miles of the Mexican border." in 1967 when a farm Captain Allee became nationally-know- n union strike was underway in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas. The Ranger detachment under his command was accused of and brutality. This led to demands by Texas liberals that the Rangers be disbanded. Captain Allee, in a filmed interview, dismisses such proposals as "Just a whole lot of bunk." The Ranger report includes film of a barbecue and reunion hosted by Captain Allee for his former Ranger colleagues at his ranch near Carrizo Springs, Texas. One of his former sidekicks, Dudley White Jr., says in an interview that some people would have wanted to kill Allee "but they were afraid they'd miss and they knew they wouldn't live to tell the tale." Captain Allee told Mr. Pettit: "I'd a whole lot rather be tried for killing someone than have someone be tried for killing me." Captain Allee was known as outspoken and fearless. He was famous for the statement: "I never attempted an arrest; I either arrested the man or I didn't." award-winnin- p 22, 1972 Partridges at Nlarineland ABC Sports commentator g Howard Cosell, as himself, uses his probing interview technique to help the Partridges strike a blow for the guest-starrin- preservation of whales in "Whatever Happened to Moby Dick?" on Channel 4's "The Partridge Family" Friday at 6:30 pjn. The loss of the sight in her left eye at the beginning of her meteoric career, brought true concern and sympathy to her from her many fans. She was lucky in that the operation behind the eye did not affect the looks of it and she can still use it as before.
