Gates Sr. of the Orem Jaycees keeps busy setting a pace which his fellow club members envy. But Bryant Gates is no ordinary Jaycee. At 78 he is the oldest active Jaycee in the United States. Actually he is an associate member of the Jaycees, the title given to the members who are over 35. Almost every Jaycee chapter has associate members but none has one as old as Mr. Gates. His involvement in the Jaycees began when he was much younger only 77 years old. He became aware of some Jaycee activities last fall and inquired about membership. Pop lives in a small bid comfortable mobile home at 160 N. State in Orem. A small American flag waves just outside the home which seems to remind the neighborhood that inside is a patriotic man who fought in World War I and who is still trying to make contributions to the community and country in which he lives. comA recent television mercial drew Pop's ire when it featured the music "Taps" in conjunction with the destruction of old automobiles. He has stood by too many graves to see any humor in the ad. Member of VFW Pop is a VFW member and has been active in the Masonic Order. Last Monday Pop celebrated his 78th birthday at a dinner with 15 of his closest friends. Among the gifts was a windbreaker with a small American flag patch on the front and a Jaycee emblem on the back the largest Jaycee emblem in the state. On the blue and white polka-dotte- d vest which Jaycee members wear, he has a large Model-- T the Ford patch symbol of the Orem chapter. His patch, naturally, is the largest in the Orem chapter. Last night at a parade for the statewide Jaycee Convention in Price, Pop wore the vest along hat and a with a tall corn cob pipe. He enjoyed the parade and preparing for it just as he enjoys occupying his time in "retirement" with Jaycee affairs. Any of the Jaycees can verify that it is much more than just an impressive title for an old man. Pop hasn't missed a meeting and is in constant contact with the other officers giving advice, in corrections making correspondence and in offering new ideas for projects. Mr. Gates has made many friends in the Orem area since coming to Utah 11 years ago after his wife died. He chose Utah to be close to his only child, a son who worked at the Salt Lake Airport. The son has since moved to Denver but Pop liked this area so he stayed. Pop was born in Detroit but spent most of his life around Cleveland where he worked for trucking companies and drove armored cars and buses. Once established in Utah he made the acquaintance of Rue Clegg for whom he operated the hit at Bridal Veil Falls for three years.
