Show CHARGES OF BRIBERY IN THE ILLINOIS HOUSE; DAY'S SESSION QUIET SPRINGFIELD, 111., April 24. The opening of the session of the Legislature Legisla-ture this morning was a calm after the storm yesterday, although there was a decided undercurrent of feeling against Speaker Miller, which threatened to break out again if anything similar to the tactics of yesterday was attempted. The chief interest in the traction question ques-tion centered around the appointment of the committee to investigate the charges of attempted bribery in behalf of the Mueller bill made yesterday by Speaker Miller. . The Speaker would not announce the members of the com-- com-- mittee this morning and none of his followers would give out the names if they knew them. In accordance with an agreement reached this morning between the two factions no attempt was made to approve ap-prove the journal of yesterday and the proceedings of yesterday were left open. ' The House was called to order at 9:15 by Speaker Miller. Chaplain Powers offered a fervent prayer, but made no reference to the exciting scenes of yesterday yes-terday or the charge of attempt of bribery which Speaker Miller made at I the session last evening. The clerk proceeded with the reading of the Journal up to the close of the regular afternoon session. Then Mr. Rlnaker moved that the further reading read-ing of the Journal and its approval be postponed until the next legislative session. ses-sion. The motion was carried without opposition. Mr. Curtis, by unanimous consent, then called up a number of appropriation appropria-tion bills on second reading. At 10:20 Mr. Llndley asked unanimous consent of the House for the consideration considera-tion of the Lindley bill and requested further that the consent should cover all the amendments. The consent was obtained and Mr. Lindley entered upon an exhaustive discussion of traction legislation leg-islation past and present. The Representatives from counties other than Cook who are opposed to ' Speaker Miller announced that they would not agree to further consideration considera-tion of traction matters until the bribery bri-bery charges made yesterday by Speaker Speak-er Miller had been investigated. The Cook county members of the conference agreed with this position and it was decided to force the appointment of an investigation committee. |
