Show MINERS FALL INTO SHAFT Accident to Brake Lets Six Men Drp Nearly 800 Feet. ST. GEORGE, Utah, April 24. An accident ac-cident that might have resulted ' with several fatalities occurred at the Utah and Eastern " company copper mine Wednesday had it not been for the presence pres-ence of mind of Engineer Billy Williams, Wil-liams, who applied all the friction possible. The night shift was going on at 6:20 o'clock. Seven men got on to the skip, three riding on the cross head and four in the bottom of the skip. As soon as the skip started to go down the brake broke and it went to the bottom of the shaft, a distance of 775 feet. Heber Barron, who was riding on the crosshead. grabbed one of the timbers in the shaft on the ISO-foot level and reached a ladder and got oil uninjured. The less fortunate went to the bottom. Joseph Bringhurst and Lamar Pierce escaped without and injury except a slight nervous shock. George Davis, ankle sprained and bruised otherwise. Frank Burgess, bruised across shoulders and chest; maybe injured internally. in-ternally. The others received some flesh wounds and painful bruises. Dr. Aflleck was called to the scene at once. The men have b'en brought to town and are receiving the best of care. |
