Mrs. Lucy Garvin returned to Park City last week, after a pleasant visit with Mrs. James O'Connor. Mr. and Mrs. James Devine are the happy parents of a fine son. James Dugan of Beaver spent the past week in the city. James Qulnn was in Park City last week. Miss Agnes and Miss Martha Kelley of Park City were city visitors last week. Gibson and little daughter, Eloise, are having a delightful delight-ful visit with Mrs. Gibson's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt Sherman,' in Washington. Wash-ington. D. C. Arthur Pratt, warden of the Utah state prison, was honored at the last meeting of the National Wardens' association as-sociation at Chicago by being chosen third vice president of the organization. The honor came entirely unsolicited. He was placed in nomination by Mayor R. W. McClaughry. warden of the government govern-ment prison at Leavenworth, Kan., who said he believed the region beyond the Rocky mountains should be represented repre-sented In the association. ' Ferd Strouse of the Greenwald Furniture Fur-niture company and J. H. Garnett have returned from" the east. Mrs. J. G. Doolittle and her youngest son are at San Diego for a short stay before coming home. -Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hagan entertained enter-tained a party of friends Tuesday night. Mundy and son William, who have been visiting Mrs. Mundy's parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Philips, in this'eity, left Monday evening for their home in Las Vegas. D. H. Peery expects to leave about Oct. 20 for Los Angeles to spend a few weeks. Mr. and Mrs. John Malia of Ely, who are visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. D. Guernsey, will leave for their home In Nevada Saturday. Mrs. Thomas L.Halliday of 258 North Main street entertained in honor hon-or of the birthday anniversaries of her husband and her sister-in-law, Mrs. R. I. Jack, Wednesday evening. A few complimentary remarks, addressed to the two guests of honor, were given by M. H. Weight, former mayor of Pasadena, Pasa-dena, Cal.. who is now visiting hi3 wife's parents. Michael Halloran of Kemmerer returned re-turned to his home recently after a pleasant visit with his brother, F. E. Halloran. Mr. Halloran la the well known railroad man of Kemmerer. Knights of Columbus Initiation. A class of twenty-three candidates was initiated into three degrees of the Knights of Columbus last Sunday afternoon aft-ernoon by Salt Lake council No. 602. The degree work in all its Impressive solemnity was conducted with the assistance as-sistance of the Ogden and Eureka councils. The Salt Lake council exemplified ex-emplified the first and second degrees, and the third was conferred by State Deputy W. L. Maginnis of Ogden and his staff. In the morning the knights from Salt Lake council, the visiting knights from other councils and the candidates for initiation attended a special mass at St. Mary's cathedral. The Rev. Father Curran preached a brief sermon. In which he congratulated the Knights of Columbus on their showing. Immediately following the initiatory ceremonies a banquet was served in the council hall. Plates were laid for 250. Roy Byrne, as toastmaster. officiated. Grand Knight James Kllleen, in a short address, welcomed the visiting members mem-bers of the Knights of Columbus, the old members and the guests of honor, the Catholic clergy of the diocese of Salt Lake. The Very Rev. Father D. Kiely, vicar general of the diocese of Salt Lake, representing Bishop Scanlan, made an especially eloquent talk on the -relations between the clergy cler-gy and the Knights of Columbus. His address was an enthusiastic one and was especially pleasing to the members mem-bers of the order. Judge Maginnis followed Father Kiely Kie-ly with the story of the work of the order in Utah, Its aims and its details. Past State Deputy George Jay Gibson told of the practical work proposed by the order. In one of the best responses of the evening. W. M. Robertson of Los Angeles discussed the accomplishments of the California knights. The Rev. Dean Harris of Montreal pointed out a few pitfalls that, by conservatism, con-servatism, the Knights of Columbus can avoid. He ppoke of the Catholic orders in Canada and told why some of them had failed. Among the other speakers of the evening were J. C. Lynch, T. J. O'Brien, J. M. Johnstone. Thomas O'Connor of Park City, Grand Knight Devine of Ogden, C. C. Charles of Butte. J. C. Cashin of Evanston and J. H. McChrystal.
