Show RIO GRANDE BUYS 11 LOCOMOTIVES With record-breaking loads of war freight demanding every ounce of available power, the Rio Grande railroad has just purchas-. ed eleven steam locomotives from the Norfolk and Western railroad. Several of the engines already have arrived, and been pressed into in-to immediate service. The others are expected shortly. Four of the engines are to be used in passenger service and seven sev-en for freight movement. The latter lat-ter are the compound mallet type and develop 109,000 pounds tractive trac-tive effort. In addition to the important addition ad-dition to its fleet of steam power, the Rio Grande has just ordered three more of the huge 5400-horse power diesel freight locomotives. |
