Show OFFICER WRITES OF DEATH OF CALVIN DIAMOND Mrs. Calvin Diamond is in receipt re-ceipt of a letter from Calvin's superior su-perior officer in the Navy. He said his ship was returning to the Phil-pinnes Phil-pinnes with a re-supply convoy when, at 9:30 a. m., on Feb. 11, she was torpedoed. He said that Calvin was below deck when the explosion occurred ..and then only a short time elapsed between the explosion anu uie auiK.mg uj. lilc ship, making it impossible for Calvin Cal-vin to abandon ship. He further stated that the action occurred several hundred miles east of the coast of Leyte, and the time of day made it possible to make a thorough search for any survivors. The officer commented on Calvin's Cal-vin's fine service as a small boat engineer and coxswain, stating that day or night, he was always ready and willing to do his share. He said he joined the crew at Camp Bradford and was aboard at the time of the christening of the ship, and practically grew up with it, meeting first enemy action in the Leyte campaign with Philippine Philip-pine operations following. He closed his letter with the statement, "Calvin was a brave man, a credit to his home and country," and that he was proud to have served with him and to call him his shipmate. |
